Studies show that many people don't even have to have encountered a spider before to be afraid of them, and the arachnid aversion is heritable, so there might be genetics at play.
What’s up, VoiceTubers? Leila here. Does the very thought of speaking in front of a crowd make your heart beat faster and your palms sweat? Does the sight of a single cockroach make you scream uncontrollably? Does even the smallest dog make you run in the opposite direction? If any of that sounds familiar, you might have a phobia and you certainly wouldn’t be alone. Phobias like arachnophobia are super common and today’s video unpacks why that is. Understanding the root of a problem can help to solve the problem, so check out today’s video if you haven’t already.
In the meantime, let’s move on to our Sentence of the Day:
Studies show that many people don't even have to have encountered a spider before to be afraid of them, and the arachnid aversion is heritable, so there might be genetics at play.
Pronunciation tips: Encountered (/ed/ can be pronounced in different ways) Arachnid (/ch/ can be pronounced different ways) Heritable (how to flow more naturally through a 4-syllable word)
Vocabulary:
encounter (n.) KK: /ɪnˋkaʊntɚ/ IPA: /ɪnˈkaʊn.t̬ɚ/ to experience something, especially something unpleasant
i.e. Of course I pay attention while driving, but I never expected to encounter a car driving in reverse on my side of the road at night!
aversion (n.) KK: /əˋvɝʃən/ IPA: /əˈvɝː.ʒən/ /əˈvɝː.ʃən/ (a person or thing that causes) a feeling of strong dislike or of not wishing to do something
i.e. Ever since Bruce got food poisoning, he’s had an aversion to eating undercooked eggs at restaurants.
heritable (adj.) KK: /ˋhɛrətəb!/ IPA: /ˈher.ɪ.t̬ə.bəl/ A heritable disease or characteristic can be passed from a parent or grandparent to a child through the genes.
i.e. Did you know that trauma is actually heritable? It damages our DNA, so you can pass that damaged DNA down to your kids.
Today’s video quickly mentioned exposure therapy. That’s a kind of psychological treatment in which people with fears are slowly and consistently exposed to the thing they fear, but in a safe environment. So if you were afraid of, I don’t know, goats, for example, the first week you’d just look at a picture of a goat, the next week you might try touching a stuffed animal goat, and the next week maybe you’d go visit a farm and just look at a real goat from far away. You see where I’m going with this? You keep increasing your exposure little by little, until eventually you can pet a real goat without being afraid.
It could work when done properly, but it reminds me of one friend who tried to do exposure therapy on themselves without any guidance. My friend had to take some kind of medication, I forget what it was, but she had the choice of a daily pill or a monthly injection. She chose the injection.
“But you’re terrified of needles. Why didn’t you opt for the pill?”
“Exposure therapy! I’m going to rid myself of this fear once and for all!”
After 4 or 5 months, I asked her how it was going.
“It’s horrible! I hate it!”
“Isn’t each time supposed to be a little easier?”
“Supposedly, but every single time I sit outside the clinic with my heart racing, it feels like the nurse is throwing the needle at me, and afterwards I always feel lightheaded, like I’m going to pass out.”
After about a year of torturing herself, my friend switched her medication to an easy to swallow pill.
So, what about you? Do you have any phobias? Have you done anything to try to get rid of them? Let me know in the comments. And as always, hit that record button when you’re ready with your sentence.
On a personal note, this is my last episode here at VoiceTube, but I expect all y’all to keep working on your sentences! See ya out there!
