Intro:
Hi, VoiceTubers! This is Jeff Chiao. Do you own a car right now? Are you considering buying one if not? As concerns arise for the pollution private cars make compared to other transportation methods such as buses, subways, and bikes, fewer and fewer people are considering cars as their primary means of moving around. Not to mention financial concerns such as high tax rates, maintenance costs, potential depreciation, and parking costs, buying a car doesn’t seem like a fair trade, especially if you are living in a city with an adequate public transportation system.

But from time to time, there will still be some occasions that having a car is much more flexible, like the time when you were trying to drag the cheap cupboard you bought from IKEA to home via a bus. So, is there any way that could potentially solve this problem? According to the video today, yes, there is, and you should go check out for yourself. But before that, let’s deal with our featured sentence first.

Featured Sentence:
“To try to attract these otherwise lost customers, new methods of ownership are being thought up and tried out.”
[ 為了吸引這些即將流逝的顧客們,廠商們開始思考並嘗試了新型態的擁車方式。 ]

Okay, let me repeat it one more time, just a little bit slower.

“To try to attract these otherwise lost customers, new methods of ownership are being thought up and tried out.”

With that out of the way, let’s head to the pronunciation tips.

Pronunciation tips:
As usual, our first tip today is about the connection between successive words. We got quite some examples today, and the first one is actually the combination of three words: “methods of ownership.” We could combine /s/ in “methods with “of” as “methoz-of”, and then combine /f/ in “of” with “ownership” as “of-ownership”. Notice that while connecting “of” with other words in such fashion, it should be pronounced as a weaker /əv/ instead of /ɑːv/. So all three words combined, it should be: “methoz-of-ownership.”
The second example is “thought up.” We could connect /t/ in “thought” with “up”, and pronounce them as “thought-up.” Thought-up.
The last example is “tried out.” We could combine /d/ in “tried” with “out”, and pronounce them as “tried-out.” Tried-out.

There is also one word worth mentioning, and that is “ownership.” The “ow” alone sounds like “oʊ”, combined with “ner” and it should be pronounced as /oʊ.nɚ/. The “i” is a short /ɪ/ sound and the stress should be put on the first syllable, so it’s “ownership.” Ownership.

All right, with the tips sorted, let’s get to the vocabulary.

Vocabulary:

attract (v.) KK [əˋtrækt] IPA /əˈtrækt/
(of people, things, places, etc.) to pull or draw someone or something towards them, by the qualities they have, especially good ones
(尤因具有積極、值得讚賞的品質而)吸引;招引;引起
The amusement park attracts lots of thrill-seekers for its one-of-a-kind collection of rides.
這座遊樂園因為其獨一無二的各種設施而吸引了眾多追球刺激的遊客。

otherwise (conj.) KK [ˋʌðɚ͵waɪz] IPA /ˈʌð.ɚ.waɪz/
used after an order or suggestion to show what the result will be if you do not follow that order or suggestion
否則,不然
I suggest you be aware of what you are saying right now, otherwise, you may soon find yourself in trouble.
我建議你現在講話最好小心點,不然你很快就發現自己深陷麻煩之中。

ownership (n.) KK [ˋonɚ͵ʃɪp] IPA /ˈoʊ.nɚ.ʃɪp/
the fact that you own something
所有權;物主身份;擁有
After endless bureaucratic procedures, Jack finally claimed ownership of his first real estate successfully.
在經過無數的官僚手續之後,Jack 總算成功地取得了他首個房地產的所有權。

Outro:

So that wraps up today’s episode!

Although I do love cars and all, I don’t actually own a car right now, and honestly don’t feel the necessity of it as well. I live in a city with quite a comprehensive public transportation network and commute with the metro, so there really isn’t much incentive for me to buy a car. As mentioned earlier in the intro, the costs of owning and maintaining a car are just too high for me. I mean, of course, I would love to have a nice little sports car for track days on the weekends, but after thinking about all the fuss about financing it and keeping it running smoothly, it just doesn’t seem like a reasonable choice.

But occasionally, it is fun to rent a ride, and have a road trip with friends though. Rather than just sitting in a train or a tour bus and letting the driver take you from place to place, driving by yourself on the road, chatting with friends on the way, and casually stopping by any attractions you happen to spot on the road signs… It really is a unique experience. Maybe at the end of the day, what matters the most is not what kind of car you are driving, where you are driving to, or even whether you own the car or not, but who are the ones in the car with you.

This is Jeff Chiao from VoiceTube. Hope y’all have a good one! Until next time, goodbye.
