[TRANSCRIPT]
What’s up, VoiceTubers? Leila here. How often do you think about feet? No, not your feet. Just feet, in general. I’m guessing pretty rarely.
"What about podiatrists?"
Okay, well, sure. I guess they think about feet a lot considering they’re doctors who specialize in feet, but I mean the rest of us who aren’t, y’know, high-level medical professionals. Human feet just aren’t something we generally think about.
"Oh yeah? What about pedicurists?"
Uh, well, yeah, you got me there, but–
"Ha! What about shoe salespeople?"
Okay! Okay! I give up! There are definitely some people who think about feet way more than others. The point that I’m getting at here is that we generally accept that our feet are the way that they are, but today’s video takes on the argument that the human foot is, and I quote, "kind of a design disaster." Check out the video if you haven’t already.
In the meantime, let’s move on to our Sentence of the Day:
Going bipedal involved some painful anatomical tradeoffs, including everything from where the spine attaches to the skull, to the angle of the femurs, and of course, the shape of our feet.
轉變為兩足步行牽涉到一些在生理構造上痛苦的代價,範圍從我們脊椎與頭骨的連接位置到大腿骨的角度,還有理所當然的,我們足部的形狀。
Pronunciation tips:
1. bipedal
If you’re familiar with the word ‘pedal’, as in "My foot slipped off the pedal as I was pedaling my bike," then you might think this word should be pronounced bie-peh-dal. However, you should say this word as bie-PEE-dal.
2. femurs
Like the word ‘bipedal’, this is another long-ee-vowel-sound word that is only spelled with a single ‘e’. So, say this word as FEE-murs.
3. anatomical
a-na-TOM-i-cal
4. trade-offs
5. Linking words:
and + of
shape + of
Vocabulary:
trade-off (n.) KK: /ˋtred͵ɔf/ IPA: /ˈtreɪd.ɑːf/
a situation in which you accept something bad in order to have something good
妥協,讓步
i.e. Delegating tasks to others in your team means accepting the trade-off that people might not do a task exactly the same way that you would do it.
將任務委派給團隊中的其他人意味著你接受他們可能不會跟自己完全相同的方式來完成任務的。
anatomical (adj.) KK: /͵ænəˋtɑmɪk!/ IPA: /ˌæn.əˈtɑː.mɪ.kəl/
relating to the physical structure of an animal or plant
解剖構造的;動植物結構的
anatomically correct (adj.) KK: /͵ænəˋtɑmɪk!ɪ kəˋrɛkt/ IPA: /æn.əˌtɑː.mɪ.kəl.i kəˈrekt/
showing the body of a person or animal accurately, including the sexual organs
生理結構上準確的
i.e. Simon and Hannah feel really strongly that if their kids are going to play with any dolls at all, they had better be anatomically correct dolls.
Simon 和 Hannah 非常強烈地認為,如果他們的孩子要玩任何洋娃娃,他們最好是生理結構上準確的洋娃娃。
spine (n.) KK: /spaɪn/ IPA: /spaɪn/
the line of bones down the center of the back that provides support for the body and protects the spinal cord
脊柱;脊椎
i.e. Ever since he was pushed to wrestle and play football so competitively as a kid, Bruce’s spine has never been the same.
自從他小時候被逼去摔跤和踢足球以來,Bruce 的脊椎就變得不一樣了。
For a while, I had this pair of boots that I wore pretty much every day. I loved them so much that I bought a second identical pair. That means I wore them for about two years or so, and for that entire period of time, I struggled with lower back and hip pain. I couldn’t figure out what the problem was. I went to a chiropractor and a massage therapist on a regular basis. While I always felt better after a visit, the problem didn’t go away. I changed my bed. Didn’t help. Meanwhile, I was also experiencing this weird loss of feeling in my feet. Both of my big toes were starting to go numb. Couldn’t figure out why.
Then one day, I ran into a friend on the street. I recognized him from pretty far back, but it wasn’t until I was right in front of him that he recognized me.
"That was you? Y’know, I saw this woman walking toward me, and I thought, ‘Is that Leila?’ but the way the woman was walking–"
And then he did this impression of my gait, all clunky and heavy-like.
"And I thought, nah, that can’t be Leila."
That’s when I realized that these heavy, pointy-toe, too-small boots were making me walk in an unhealthy way. They were pinching my toes together and forcing my hips and spine out of alignment. I got rid of the boots immediately and within a couple of weeks, all my pain and numbness went away.
What about you? Do you have a pair of shoes that you absolutely love even though they kill your feet? Have you ever done any special foot exercises? Let me know in the comments. And as always, hit that record button when you’re ready with your sentence. Catch ya next time.

轉變為以兩足行走讓我們人類在生理構造上承受了一些痛苦的代價,包括脊椎與頭骨的連接位置,到大腿骨的角度,還有理所當然的,我們足部的形狀。
【心得】即便只用兩隻腳走路,還是有不少人用蜈蚣的心態在買鞋XD
