Welcome to this week’s news report. I'm Leila.
2022 Winter Olympic Games to Start Amidst COVID Complications
The 2022 Winter Olympic Games is less than two weeks away, this time taking place in Beijing. Nearly 3,000 international athletes are expected to compete, however, fans from outside the country are not allowed to attend and China announced last Monday that tickets won’t be sold to the public in China either. That doesn’t mean stands will necessarily be empty. Those who wish to attend can only do so after meeting China’s COVID requirements and then being invited. Organizers are holding the games in a closed-loop system. This means that participants cannot have contact with the general public, and only those participants are allowed at hotels, competition venues, and on official vehicles. Unvaccinated participants must quarantine in Beijing first for 21 days. Anyone who tests positive will be isolated and removed from the games.
China made this rule shortly after it confirmed its first case of Omicron in Beijing, just a 15-minute drive from the Olympic Park. While the variant is less severe than other forms of COVID, China has a zero-tolerance policy which means that even a single case will result in strict lockdown and contact tracing. The entire community where the person with Omicron lives is under lockdown, as is the person’s workplace, which happens to be in a bank inside a building. However, the bank and building are not empty. People have been locked down at work. CNN10’s video shows COVID control staff carting in big boxes of pillows and bedding to make the offices more comfortable while the people inside undergo multiple tests. This kind of lockdown is not unique to Beijing. Social media shows video footage of shoppers being trapped at a store in Shanghai when a lockdown was suddenly enforced. Besides being locked down at the office or a store, 20 million Chinese have been recently locked down in their homes, and others have been bussed to quarantine encampments.
Civil Rights Advocate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Remembered and Honored
The third Monday in January is an annual federal holiday in America in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The holiday was signed into law in 1986, however, even before then, several states and cities had been holding their own holidays for the man. Dr. King was an American Baptist minister who advocated for and participated in peaceful demonstrations to gain civil rights for Black Americans. Marches, parades, and other events were held on the 17th to honor his legacy. While many Americans get the day off from work for Martin Luther King Day, they’re encouraged to volunteer in community improvement projects. Last year, some members of the Harvard Diversity Project made a video sharing some memorable and influential passages from some of Dr. King’s most famous speeches during the 1960s, including his 1965 speech "Our God is Marching On", from which comes our sentence of the day.
And now, our Sentence of the Day:
Somebody's asking, "How long will prejudice blind the vision of men?" However difficult the moment, however frustrating the hour, it will not be long, because truth, crushed to earth, will rise again.
Let’s look at some vocabulary from the sentence:
prejudice
KK /ˋprɛdʒədɪs/ IPA /ˈpredʒ.ə.dɪs/
an unfair and unreasonable opinion or feeling, especially when formed without enough thought or knowledge
i.e. For many years, prejudice against female authors forced women to adopt male pen names or ask a male partner to publish their writings.
blind
KK /blaɪnd/ IPA /blaɪnd/
to make someone unable to notice or understand something
i.e. Sometimes the love that parents feel for their children blinds them to the reality that their kids are capable of lying, cheating, or stealing.
frustrating
KK /ˋfrʌstretɪŋ/ IPA /ˈfrʌs.treɪ.t̬ɪŋ/
making you feel annoyed or less confident because you cannot achieve what you want
i.e. If you've ever received a text message with a symbol that you were not familiar with, you know how frustrating it can be to not understand what the sender meant to say.
Today's CNN10 video left me with some gray-area questions.
What does the future hold for competitive sports events, in regards to both the athletes who would participate in them and the fans who would like to attend live events?
Will China’s efforts to contain COVID be successful in keeping its 1.4 billion people healthy?
I’m Leila, and that’s the news for now.
