Intro:
Hello VoiceTubers, welcome back! Did you know that our planet is getting warmer every year? It might bring extreme weather changes, causing summers to be increasingly hot and winters increasingly cold. It can bring storms and floods in some parts of the world and perhaps even develop into a famine. What causes global warming then? First, we need to understand that some of the heat coming from the sun is trapped inside the earth's atmosphere, and this helps keep the earth warm. The atmosphere is a layer of gases that surrounds the earth and protects it. Under normal circumstances, the gases in our atmosphere store just enough heat so the climate is not too cold or too hot. But over time, some of those gases accumulate and more and more heat is stored in the atmosphere. This causes a warming of the whole planet, which causes problems in the normal behavior of climate and weather. This is called the greenhouse effect.
What causes the amount of gases to increase? Probably us - humans. Scientists say that by burning coal and fossil fuels (used in planes and cars for example) - we release CO2 into the atmosphere. We also release other gases through the burning of wastes, mining coals, and oil extractions from the ground. There are also gases released from agriculture and artificial gases from industrial and commercial practices.
So can we do anything to reverse the greenhouse effect? And if so - what can be done? If you’re curious, you should definitely watch our video of the day. But now, let’s have a listen to the pronunciation challenge sentence:
[2'30'']
Sentence:
NASA satellites are constantly measuring the gases in our atmosphere from space.
美國太空總署持續透過衛星在外太空監測大氣層氣體的濃度。
Pronunciation Tips:
NASA
satellite
constantly
measuring
atmosphere
Vocabulary:
1. satellite KK[ˋsæt!͵aɪt] IPA/ˈsæt̬.əl.aɪt/
n. 人造衛星 a device sent up into space to travel around the earth, used for collecting information or communicating by radio, television, etc.
Example:
Satellites move very fast, at roughly 18,000 miles an hour, which allows them to orbit the earth 14 times a day.
衛星的移動速度非常快,大約每小時 18,000 英里,這使它們能夠每天繞地球運行 14 次。
2. constantly KK[ˋkɑnstəntlɪ] IPA/ˈkɑːn.stənt.li/
adv. 持續地,不斷地 all the time or often
Example:
His father constantly nags him about his school grades.
他的父親不斷的嘮叨關於學校的成績。
3. atmosphere KK[ˋætməs͵fɪr] IPA/ˈæt.mə.sfɪr/
n. 大氣層 the mixture of gases around the earth
n. 氣氛 the character, feeling, or mood of a place or situation
Example:
The atmosphere is amazing at this club.
這間夜店的氣氛太棒了。
Outro:
So now that we are aware of the problem, and we know what’s causing it, what can we do? The UN has launched a program to raise awareness, and come up with solutions. We must achieve zero emissions into the atmosphere by 2050 or it will be too late. Zero emissions mean that all man-made greenhouse gas emissions must be removed from the atmosphere through reduction measures. Once we cross a certain threshold, there will be no coming back and our planet will be ruined forever, and at one point also become not suitable for living. Governments have started to act on this, but what can we do as individuals? Well, there are a few things. First, we can reduce our carbon footprint. Try taking public transportation instead of driving cars. Fly less if possible, ride bicycles, and use electric or hybrid cars instead of traditional fossil fuel vehicles. Second, we can be more aware of our food consumption. We can buy locally grown foods so they don’t need to be transported from other parts of the world. We can eat fresh, seasonal produce so they don’t need to be conserved, and eat more plant-based foods. Were you aware that the beef and dairy cattle industry is one of the main contributors to global greenhouse gases? Yeah, steaks are delicious but they are not very environmentally friendly. We should also try to reduce food wastes and recycle and reuse plastic containers. Third, we can appeal to our local governments and encourage them to act now. If we all start acting together, there is still some chance of change, but we must do it now, and together - all over the world. Even preparing your own shopping bags when going grocery shopping is an act of love for our environment!
Thanks guys for joining me today and I hope you have a wonderful week ahead.
Bye for now
