Today’s video is all about the activity that costs almost a third of our life--if you have a healthy routine, that is, we spend a large portion of our life basically doing literally nothing but lying on our bed. However, do we really pay enough attention to how we actually build up our habits around sleeping? And how does our time in bed intrinsically affect our mental health? When it comes to sleepless nights, the memory of living in a shared apartment always comes to my mind. That was the time I was still studying for my master’s degree, and living with three gentlemen in a shared apartment. Having my bed just against the wall separating my room and the living room, whenever someone was watching TV, I could always hear the sound of it and their laughter—no matter if it was 11 p.m. or 4 a.m. Needless to say, this made it really hard to have a sound sleep at night, especially after one of the roomnates, let’s just call him Mr.A, his friend started “living” on the couch, without paying any rent, and watching TV all day. After a few discussions, negotiations and arguments (as you can see, the situation escalated quite quickly), in the end, the counterparts not only didn’t really seem to care what I asked—just simply a quieter environment after midnight—and were genuinely irritated by my act of contacting the property manager.

So on a dark and quiet night, as I was lying on my bed and, as always, trying to get some sleep, I heard the abrupt banging sound coming from my door. “Get out of your room! We need to talk.” Mr. A said, with his friends shouting hysterically outside. Puzzled and frightened, I picked up my phone, and a text message appeared on the screen: “They seem to have some weapons in hand. I think you should leave.” came from the other roommate. So I did. Luckily, we were on the first floor, so I just packed some necessities, opened up the window, and slipped away from my own room. In a moonless, silent night.

I then went to ask my friend for help, and stayed in his room for around 2 weeks until we reported the incident to the apartment manager. Mr. A got kicked out, and I could finally return back to my lovely little fortress. It was such an experience that, until this day, I still felt a little bit unreal. But hey, I guess that is the price for pursuing decent sleep quality, and it surely was worth the effort!
