The script!
Today’s video attempts to take real-world scientific knowledge and apply it to the fictional world of Star Wars. It comes to some pretty incredible conclusions. If you’re a fan of science or a fan of Star Wars, I suggest you check it out. I have my own thoughts about the video but I’ll save those for later. For now, let’s have a look at today’s featured sentence:
Sentence: It just requires obliterating the top, a 0.1% of the planet near the surface. The other 99.9% of a planet is generally things like magma that isn't particularly hospitable to life.
其實只需要破壞地表最上方0.1%的面積。剩下的99.9%通常是岩漿之類的東西,本來就不適合生物生存。
Pronunciation Tips:
Blended words: that isn’t
Obliterating: 5 syllables -> long o, short i, short e blended with r, long a, short i blended with ng
Particularly -> make sure the ‘r’ and ‘l’ sounds are clearly enunciated
Vocabulary:
1. require (v.) KK[rɪˋkwaɪr] IPA/rɪˈkwaɪə/
需要;有賴於
To require means to need something or make something necessary. Here’s an example sentence: “This radio requires four AA batteries to work.”
這個收音機需要四個AA的電池才能用。
2. obliterate (V.) KK[əˋblɪtə͵ret] IPA/əˈblɪtəreɪt/
徹底毀掉,抹去
To obliterate means to remove all signs of something, either by destroying it or by covering it so that it cannot be seen. Here is an example sentence: “The small meteor was obliterated upon entering Earth’s atmosphere.” 小流星在進入地球的大氣層之前就徹底被毀滅了。
3. hospitable (Adj.) KK[ˋhɑspɪtəb!] IPA/ˈhɒspɪtəbl/
- 適宜生活的
One meaning for hospitable is providing good conditions for living or growing. For example, “The temperatures and low rainfall of Western Australia provide hospitable conditions for growing mangoes.”
澳洲西部的溫度和低雨量提供了適宜種植芒果的條件。
- 友好的,好客的
Another meaning of hospitable is friendly and welcoming to guests and visitors. For example, “The people of Southern USA are famous for the warm and hospitable way they receive guests.”
美國南部的民眾是以好客為名。
Outro
That brings us to the end of today’s pronunciation challenge. I saw my first Star Wars movie, “The Empire Strikes Back”, way back in 1980. The movie had so many fantastical elements that even I, as a young child, was confused about some things. For example, are droids robots, or are they alive? If they’re robots, why do they appear to have feelings and emotions? Eventually, I learned to accept that this was just a made-up story for entertainment, so we can’t apply the same rules to it as we would the real world.
Today’s video, in a roundabout way, appears to arrive at a similar conclusion. Once you start applying what we scientifically know to be true to a fantasy setting such as this, its plausibility starts to fall apart very quickly. But that’s OK! The world needs more scientists and engineers, so I think it’s great that science fiction movies like Star Wars engage young people and make them start asking questions.
Now I want to hear from you! What have you seen in a movie or TV show that makes you question the science behind it? Let me know in the comments below, and don’t forget to do your recording!
I’m Jonathan for VoiceTube. I’ll catch you next time!

【心得】要到外星球生活可能還不是那麼容易,生活機能都要備齊,比較有意義,不然可能跟在荒島生活沒兩樣吧?!
