Today’s video talks about changing careers, and what a stress-inducing, difficult decision that can be. Have you ever changed careers before, or have you thought about it? Do you know what factors you should consider when making such a decision? Watch the video to find out! I changed careers once, many years ago, and I’ll share my story about that later. Right now, however, let’s check out today’s featured sentence:
Sentence: 141-150
We need to weigh up investments now, not against our most recent experiences, but in the light of a more accurate picture of an entire life.
我們得權衡投資,不拘泥於現階段的經驗,而是放眼整個生命的藍圖。
Pronunciation:
Investments - the ‘t’s are not clearly enunciated
Experiences - five syllables
Blended words - light of a, of an, weigh up
Vocabulary:
Investment n KK[ɪnˋvɛstmənt] IPA/ɪnˈvɛs(t)m(ə)nt/
Investment is defined as the action or process of investing money for profit. Here’s an example sentence: “The company’s early investment in ARM technology has paid for itself several times over.”
weigh up phr [we][ʌp] /weɪ//ʌp/
Weigh up means to carefully assess someone or something. Here’s an example sentence: “Before I decide whether to move downtown or stay here in the suburbs, I need to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages.”
In the light of phr KK[ɪn][ðə][laɪt][ɑv] /ɪn//ðə//lʌɪt//ɒv/
In the light of means taking something into consideration. Here’s an example sentence: “In the light of the recent pandemic outbreak, the summer concert has been canceled.”
Outro:
And that brings us to the end of today’s pronunciation challenge. After I graduated from college in 1997, I went on to work for Epson, a company that makes computer peripherals like scanners and printers. This started my career in information technology. I would go on to work for The Toronto Star Newspaper and then its affiliated company Torstar Digital. But then in 2007, I got a crazy idea that I wanted to leave Canada and see more of the world. It was not an easy decision to leave my job, as I had worked there for several years by that point and was doing fairly well. But ultimately I saved my money for one year, then left my job and moved to Japan in March, 2008, and then to Taiwan a year later. I would say that, on the whole, things have worked out well for me. I really enjoy living in Taiwan and I have had a lot of great experiences teaching. But now I want to hear about you. What is your current job? If you were to change careers, what kind of job would you move to? Let me know in the comments below, and don’t forget to do your recording! I’m Jonathan for VoiceTube. I’ll catch you next time!
