Today’s video talks about changing careers, and what a stress-inducing, difficult decision that can be. Have you ever changed careers before, or have you thought about it? Do you know what factors you should consider when making such a decision? Watch the video to find out! I changed careers once, many years ago, and I’ll share my story about that later. Right now, however, let’s check out today’s featured sentence:

Sentence: 141-150
We need to weigh up investments now, not against our most recent experiences, but in the light of a more accurate picture of an entire life.
我們得權衡投資,不拘泥於現階段的經驗,而是放眼整個生命的藍圖。

Pronunciation:

Investments - the ‘t’s are not clearly enunciated
Experiences - five syllables
Blended words - light of a, of an, weigh up

Vocabulary:
Investment n KK[ɪnˋvɛstmənt] IPA/ɪnˈvɛs(t)m(ə)nt/

Investment is defined as the action or process of investing money for profit. Here’s an example sentence: “The company’s early investment in ARM technology has paid for itself several times over.”

weigh up phr [we][ʌp] /weɪ//ʌp/

Weigh up means to carefully assess someone or something. Here’s an example sentence: “Before I decide whether to move downtown or stay here in the suburbs, I need to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages.”

In the light of phr KK[ɪn][ðə][laɪt][ɑv] /ɪn//ðə//lʌɪt//ɒv/

In the light of means taking something into consideration. Here’s an example sentence: “In the light of the recent pandemic outbreak, the summer concert has been canceled.”

Outro:

And that brings us to the end of today’s pronunciation challenge. After I graduated from college in 1997, I went on to work for Epson, a company that makes computer peripherals like scanners and printers. This started my career in information technology. I would go on to work for The Toronto Star Newspaper and then its affiliated company Torstar Digital. But then in 2007, I got a crazy idea that I wanted to leave Canada and see more of the world. It was not an easy decision to leave my job, as I had worked there for several years by that point and was doing fairly well. But ultimately I saved my money for one year, then left my job and moved to Japan in March, 2008, and then to Taiwan a year later. I would say that, on the whole, things have worked out well for me. I really enjoy living in Taiwan and I have had a lot of great experiences teaching. But now I want to hear about you. What is your current job? If you were to change careers, what kind of job would you move to? Let me know in the comments below, and don’t forget to do your recording! I’m Jonathan for VoiceTube. I’ll catch you next time!

#睡不好,聽了些錄音,也許是老了耳背...當參考吧
tossing and turning all night....didn't have much sleep.

*weigh (v.) instead of weight (n.) 所以沒有/t/的尾音,也不會有塞音
weigh up: to consider something carefully so that you can make a decision about it

☺We need to weigh up investments now, not against our most recent experiences, but in the light of a more accurate picture of an entire life.
我們得權衡目前所投注的心力,不是只就自己近年的經歷來衡量,而是更精確地對照到自己的整個人生規劃做檢視。
【心得】太短視固然不好,但規劃太遠又可能會顧慮太多,且往往計畫趕不上變化。
■investment [ɪnˋvɛstmənt] (n.C or U) 投資、投資物、投資額[(+in)];授權(儀式)、授爵(儀式)
(n.U) (精力、時間等的)投入;{軍事}包圍、封鎖
■weigh up (ph. v) 估量、衡量、秤出
weigh sb/sth up (ph. v) 估計(形勢);評估(某人的能力、品質)
weigh sth up (ph. v) 就…仔細考慮(利弊);就…權衡
■in the light of sth (= in light of sth) (ph.) 按照、鑒於、因為~

We need to *weigh up(估計) investments(/ɪnˈvest.mənt/投資n.) now, not against(緊靠著prep.) our most recent experiences, but *in the light of(考量到) a more accurate(/ˈæk.jɚ.ət/準確的) picture(情況n.) of an entire life.
我們必須權衡此刻所投注的心力,不單就近來的經驗,而是考量到整個人生中更細節的情況。

I've always wanted to change my career, but what else can I do except for doing what I'm doing now? Life choices seem so limited when I reach a certain age; what's left for me are only regrets and pain.
