#5:12 most of the time, all of {?the} above.

Reasons(/ˋri:zn/理由) for wanting to write are multiple(/ˈmʌl.tə.pəl/多種的a.) of course, but the structurally(/ˈstrʌk.tʃɚ.əl.i/結構上adv.) simplest(最簡單的) option(/ˈɑːp.ʃən/可選擇的東西) may also be the most pervasive(/pɚˈveɪ.sɪv/充斥各處的a.): we write because there is no one in the vicinity(/vəˈsɪn.ə.t̬i/周圍n.) who will listen.

A: Are you listening?
B: Of course!

A: Can you give me a hand?
B: Of course!

Today we’re looking at a fascinating question, that is : Why do so many people want be writers? The video makes an interesting argument saying that people want to write because they’re lonely(/ˈloʊn.li/寂寞的). But, is that really the case? Hold that thought while we dive into our sentence of the day.

1. structurally [ˈstrʌk.tʃɚ.əl.i] (adv.)
This essay is structurally sound(紮實的), but it needs more work in terms of specificity(/ˌspesɪˈfɪsəti/具體性n.).

■ specificity /ˌspesɪˈfɪsəti/ n. 具體性;明確性 = the quality of being specific
The reporter’s recommendations lack specificity.
Researchers need to be sensitive to cultural specificities.

■ sound (a.)
He has a sound knowledge of science.

■ in terms of sth : 就⋯而言
= in relation to something
We try to do what is best for our customers in terms of the quality of our products.

2. pervasive [pɚˈveɪ.sɪv] (adj.)
Due to the construction(施工n.), the smell of wall paint(油漆n.) is pervasive within the entire building.

3. vicinity [vəˈsɪn.ə.t̬i] (n.)
No one in Edan’s vicinity understands the workings(工作,活動n.) of fashion, which is why people come to her for advice.

So, what do you think? Are there any other reasons why people might want to write? Well, here are a few: some people write to process(處理v.) the world around them (places, people, and events), others write to experience what it’s like to be *in someone else’s shoes(換位思考), and many sometimes write to convey(/kənˈveɪ/傳達v.) values(價值,意義n.) or messages that are often timeless(不受時間限制的,永恆的) and universal(通用的). And, most of the time, all of {?the} above. Not necessarily because they’re lonely, but because it’s easier to *get a point across(觀點被了解或接受), or more accessible(/əkˈses.ə.bəl/可以理解的) in a creative(/kriˈeɪ.t̬ɪv/有創意的) sort(種類n.) of way(方式n.). So, that’s another way to look at it. Bottom line(概要): write, if it pleases(使高興v.) you.

■ process /ˈprɑː.ses/ v.
Visa applications take 28 days to process.

■ put yourself in sb's place/position/shoes : 處在(某人的)角度考慮 ; 換位思考
Put yourself in my place - what else could I have done?

■ get a point across : 觀點被了解或接受
helping teachers get their point across in every subject – whether it’s Languages, Arts, Mathematics, or Science.

■ accessible /əkˈses.ə.bəl/ a.
Lea Anderson is a choreographer(/ˌkɔːr.iˈɑː.ɡrə.fɚ/舞蹈編導n.) who believes in making dance accessible.

■structurally [ˋstrʌktʃərəlɪ] (adv.)
■pervasive [pɚˋvesɪv] (adj.)
■vicinity [vəˋsɪnətɪ] (n.U) 周圍地區、鄰近地區、附近[(+of)];接近[(+to/of)]
in the vicinity of+sth

Introduction
Hey VoiceTube friends!

Today we’re looking at a fascinating question, that is: why do so many people want to be writers? The video makes an interesting argument, saying that people want to write because they’re lonely...but is that really the case? Hold that thought while we dive into our sentence of the day:

Sentence
Reasons for wanting to write are multiple of course, but the structurally simplest option may also be the most pervasive: we write because there is no one in the vicinity who will listen.

Pronunciation tips
multiple ˈmʌl.tə.pəl
structurally ˈstrʌk.tʃɚ.əl.i
colon as a pause in the sentence (further illustrating a point)

Vocabulary

structurally ˈstrʌk.tʃɚ.əl.i
Adv.

Example:
This essay is structurally sound, but it needs more work in terms of specificity.

pervasive pɚˈveɪ.sɪv
Adj.
present or noticeable in every part of a thing or place

Example:
Due to the construction, the smell of wall paint is pervasive within the entire building.

vicinity vəˈsɪn.ə.t̬i
the area around a place or where the speaker is

Example:
No one in Edna’s vicinity understands the workings of fashion, which is why people come to her for advice.

Outro
So, what do you think? Are there any other reasons why people might want to write? Well, here are a few: some people write to process the world around them (places, people, and events), others write to experience what it’s like to be in someone else’s shoes, and many sometimes write to convey values or messages that are often timeless and universal. Not necessarily because they’re lonely, but because it’s easier to get a point across, or more accessible in a creative sort of way.

Bottom line: write, if it pleases you.

I hope you enjoyed this episode, and lastly, don’t forget to leave your recordings and comments. See you next time!
