1. Do you think that TikTok poses a big threat to overseas users? Why or why not? 2. What are the keys to making something go viral on the internet these days? Share some examples.

Hey folks, welcome to today’s pronunciation challenge. How’s your summer vacation so far? Have you had fun? Or have you just been lying on your bed at home, playing with your smartphone? Haha, it’s alright, I’m not here to judge. For our topic today, we’ll be discussing an interesting APP called TikTok; yes that’s right, perhaps you’re also using it at the moment.
TikTok is one of the most popular apps in the world. It's been downloaded over a billion times in the mere two years since it's been around. TikTok allows its users to easily share short, funny clips. That means things can go viral quickly, and wind up getting popular on the internet really fast, and that virality has helped TikTok grow. Perhaps you feel that TikTok feels somewhat familiar: it is probably because it’s sort of a natural successor to the once popular Vine app, where you could share funny short clips as well.
There’s one particular song that went viral on TikTok just recently, which is called “一剪梅” and was originally sung by Taiwanese singer Fei Yu-Ching 37 years ago, but most internet surfers probably knew the song better by “Xue Hua Piao Piao”. The TikTok video featured a bald chinese guy whose head looked like an egg, singing “Xue Hua Piao Piao” in a snowy background. The song quickly became so popular and has even topped the Spotify viral 50 chart in Norway, Finland, and New Zealand, and it even ranked 2nd on the charts in Sweden.
However, there are definitely concerns in the U.S. about TikTok being a Chinese app and it becoming hugely popular in America. They fear the app might hand over data on its users to the Chinese government or censor topics that would be fine in the West but not really acceptable inside China. However, there isn't an awful lot of proof that TikTok is controlled and filtered by the Chinese government in terms of what users can and cannot post. But if TikTok wants to continue growing at its current rate, it's going to have to find a way to gain the public's trust outside of China.

☺There's still some criticism that TikTok being owned by a Chinese company might succumb to some pressure by the Chinese government.
