In the 50s, 60s and 70s only the middle class and affluent families could afford to send their little cretins to university. Even in the UK where university tuition fees have only existed since 1998, it didn’t matter because to support the family, children would have to go off to work at the age of 18 or younger, higher education was just never an option for most people.
