We’ve all been there, you are in the middle of a conversation when suddenly you realize your mind has wandered off somewhere else. A lot of us have also experienced occasional daydreaming at work. While most of the time people might think you’re wasting time zoning out during work hours, others may argue that it is healthy to daydream and it in fact boosts your creativity and problem-solving skills.
Here’s Wikipedia’s definition of daydreaming: “Daydreaming is the stream of consciousness that detaches from current, external tasks when attention drifts to a more personal and internal direction.”
Scientists agree that we spend an astonishing 30% - 50% of our time in daydreams. That’s quite a significant number, don’t you think?
Let’s talk more about the benefits of daydreaming after we go over our pronunciation challenge. Here is our sentence of the day.
Sentence: I barely have the endurance to make it through track practice... but I will.
I’ll read it more slowly and let you practice reading it after me.
Remember to connect the words ‘but’ and ‘I’.
And now, our three vocabulary words are:
Vocab: barely (adv.) KK[ˋbɛrlɪ] IPA/ˈber.li/ 僅;剛好;幾乎沒有 by the smallest amount
I’m so out of shape, I barely just made it to the top of Mount Jade. 我最近身體狀況不佳,我差一點就爬不上玉山。
endurance (n.) KK[ɪnˋdjʊrəns] IPA /ɪnˈdʊr.əns/ 忍耐力,耐受力 the ability to keep doing something difficult, unpleasant, or painful for a long time
I was very close to the limit of my endurance when he was bad-mouthing our mutual friend. 當他說我們共同的朋友的壞話時,我的忍耐已經接近極限了。
track (n.) KK[træk] IPA/træk/ 徑賽,田徑運動 the general name for a particular group of sports in which people compete, including running, jumping, and throwing
Tomorrow is our school’s annual track and field event and I’ll be running the last 100m in the girls’ relay. 明天是我們學校一年一度的田徑比賽,我將參加女子接力賽的最後 100公尺。
Outro: By tuning out the noisy “outside” world, you allow your thoughts to flow freely. When we daydream, we are encouraging mental relaxation and exploration. When we allow enough space and time for our mind to wander off into new territories, it discovers new and old things about us.
Einstein began his theory of relativity while he daydreamed about riding or running beside a sunbeam to the edge of the universe, after he was expelled from school. And Newton would never have discovered the law of gravitation, had he not been daydreaming under a tree! Some of the best ideas are conceived when you are least expecting it. So next time you’re stuck on something, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get up from your desk and go for a walk and let your mind wander because daydreaming can be beneficial for us!
Thanks for listening and I hope you will stick around and record your pronunciation challenge! I hope you will have a wonderful week and I’ll see you here again next week!
