“I admire people who dare to take the language, English, and understand it and understand the melody” - Maya Angelou
How’s it going VoiceTube world! My name is Hugh and thanks for joining me on the Pronunciation Challenge! We’re currently launching a new course with VoiceTube and this video is an example of what you’ll be getting from it. There are many phrases you can use from this video and I’ll also include some more myself that aren't in the featured sentence. Firstly, there’s the term, “grab a beer”, which literally means taking a beer but in this case, it means to drink a beer. Another one is, “I’ve had a long day at work.” which means you’ve had a long tiring day at work. The day seemed to go on and on. Oh, and here’s one that wasn’t featured in the video. Blue-collar and white-collar jobs. What do they mean? It refers to the types of jobs one person may have. What types of jobs do these colors represent? Let’s get to the featured sentence first before I tell you.
Today’s featured sentence:
We’re just having a small team-building session. Well, I think alcohol and socializing go hand in hand.
I’ll say that again.
We’re just having a small team-building session. Well, I think alcohol and socializing go hand in hand.
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have
Session
Two syllables.
The first syllable, “Se” has a short E sound, “Seh”. “Ssion” has your typical “i o n” sound with an S sound in front. “Shun.” Session.
Next up, we have
Alcohol
Three syllables
“Al” sounds like the name, Al, like Al Bundy from the American TV show, Married with Children. If you got that reference then I’m impressed! “Co” has a short U sound, “Kuh”. “Hol” sounds like the hall you have in a school or where you hold a banquet or big event. “Hall”. Alcohol.
Lastly, we have linking-words!
“Hand in hand”
Ok, this one is quite simple but it’s useful to know. Link the “D” at the end of “Hand” with the word, “in” to give you something like, “din”. Follow that up quickly with the word “hand” again. “Hand in hand”.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. session
Definition
a period of time or meeting arranged for a particular activity
Used in a sentence you could say,
“I felt like I learned a lot from our last therapy session.”
Next word,
2. alcohol
Definition
a clear liquid that can make you drunk, also used as a solvent (= a substance that dissolves another) and in fuel and medicines
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“Drinking too much alcohol is dangerous for driving.”
And lastly,
3. socializing
Definition:
the activity of spending time when you are not working with friends or with other people in order to enjoy yourself
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“I always hated events where I had to be socializing all the time.”
Ok, as promised, here’s the explanation for blue and white-collar jobs. Let’s start with white- collar jobs. They simply refer to the type of clothing you would usually wear in a typical office. In an office, you usually see more button-up shirts with white collars. That’s it! For blue-collar jobs, you usually see more people who do physical labor (labor means work) and are more hands-on. (hands-on means to use your hands to do physical work like lifting or pushing objects. It can also refer to driving a truck, working in a garage or renovation.) Growing up in Canada, I was often told that blue- collar jobs would be in demand since everyone was trying to become doctors, accountants or engineers. These would all be white- collar jobs! Hope you listeners find this useful!
Alright listeners, get those recordings in if you haven’t done so yet! Give me a follow on Instagram @hughtran_ to check out what I’m up to. Until the next episode, see ya!
