“Whoever said that money can’t buy happiness simply didn’t know where to go shopping.” - Bo Derek
Hello everyone and welcome back to the Pronunciation Challenge with me, Hugh, your host for today’s episode. Last episode, I talked about Coco. This week, I’ll be discussing something entirely different! Can we actually buy happiness? In some instances (instance means a particular situation), it actually can! Just not in the way you might imagine. It really depends on what you’re spending your hard-earned money on! If you’re focused on only buying material things, scientists have realized that this never helps. If you’re spending it on others, like buying someone a meal, to thank them for something, then that goes a long way in terms of your overall happiness. Material things can only keep you happy for a brief moment.
Want to hear about a crazy experiment that involved rats and the study of happiness? Finish the featured sentence and then come back to me. Go! Hit pause and go!
Today’s featured sentence:
If people manage to spend their money in a way that is aligned with their own psychological needs and preferences as reflected by their personality, that seems to be making people happier.
I’ll say that again.
If people manage to spend their money in a way that is aligned with their own psychological needs and preferences as reflected by their personality, that seems to be making people happier.
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have
aligned
Two syllables.
For the first syllable, “a”, simply say the short U sound. For “ligned”, just say the word “line”, like a straight line. Aligned.
Next up, we have
psychological
Five syllables
For the first syllable, ignore the letter P in front and go straight for the “sy” sound. “Sigh”, like you’re sighing. “Cho” has a C or K beginning sound and ends with a short U sound. “Lo” has a short O sound. “Gi” has a short U sound and “cal” sounds like it’s spelt, “C U L L”. Psychological
Lastly, we have,
preferences
Four syllables.
I know this has four syllables but it actually sounds like three instead. Let me explain.
For the first syllable, “pre”, make sure it’s a P R beginning sound followed by a short E sound. For the second syllable, simply say the word “friend” but without the letter D. “Ces” has a short U sound with an S sound in front. Preferences.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. align
Definition
supporting or agreeing with another person, organization, or view
Used in a sentence you could say,
“When hiring new employees, we have to make sure that their values align with our company’s.”
Next word,
2. psychological
Definition
relating to the human mind and feelings
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“Childhood abuse and trauma can lead to negative psychological problems later on in life.”
And lastly,
3. preference
Definition:
the fact that you like something or someone more than another thing or person
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“I have a preference for rich, flavorful food rather than sweets.”
So apparently there was an experiment held by scientists that wanted to see what effects the rat would have, if they had every single need taken care of. The rats had food whenever they wanted, they had sex whenever they wanted, they could play whenever they wanted and do you know what happened? Well, they were happy for a bit but afterwards, the rats started killing off each other. It seems that happiness also has something to do with having a purpose in life because if you don’t, it seems as if you’ll make up your own reason be it negative or positive.
That’s what spending money on others does right? We work hard to try and take care of our loved ones and when we are finally able to do that, we are happier seeing them happy! It’s funny how life teaches us these lessons at times.
Alright, that about does it for today’s episode. Get those recordings in! I’ve noticed that there haven't been as many recordings in my episodes lately. Bring those numbers up! I’ll be watching! Ok, until the next episode, see ya!
