Jenny's transcript! Hi there and welcome back to my weekly episode of Pronunciation Challenge! In your circle of friends, is there someone who loves to talk about himself? It feels like every time you meet, he wants to update you on all of the cool things he’s been up to. You also start to share with him something about yourself, but he doesn’t seem interested at all. He cuts you off, and continues to boast about every little accomplishment he’s achieved…so you can return with compliments and tell him how impressed you are. Does this sound like someone you know? I guess everyone likes to feel awesome about themselves but perhaps some of us are too desperate in seeking validation. It’s pretty obvious on social media, where you see a lot of people put in so much effort to display how ‘perfect’ their lives are.
This reminds me of networking events! I’ve gone to a few in the past. When you go to these events, you’re expected to meet new people and talk about yourselves. I often found myself feeling exhausted afterwards because everyone, including myself, tried so hard to be charming!
I’m glad I don’t need to do a lot of social networking anymore for my work. I’ve come to terms with myself that I don’t need to expend so much effort on trying to look strong before the world.
Okay, I’m going to take a break here and read through our focus sentence of the day, then come back to talk more about how to be charming when talking about yourself.
Sentence It's all too easy to suspect that we've been uniquely cursed in the extent of our troubles, of which we seldom find evidence in the lives around us. 我們很容易懷疑自己某種程度上受到詛咒,才會有那麼多麻煩,卻很少從身邊的人證實他們也有這些困擾。
Let me break up the sentence and read it one more time at a slower speed, so you can follow along and practice the pronunciation of the words.
Now, moving on to our vocabulary words.
Vocabulary suspect (v) 懷疑 KK [səˋspɛkt] IPA /səˈspekt/ Def: to think or believe something to be true or probable
Example sentence: Who do you suspect ate all of the ice-cream in the refrigerator? 你懷疑是誰吃了冰箱裡所有的冰淇淋?
curse (v) 詛咒 (也有講粗話罵人的意思) KK [kɝs] IPA /kɝːs/ Def: to say magic words that are intended to bring bad luck to someone
Example sentence: That teacher shouldn’t have cursed like that in front of the kindergarten kids. 那位老師不應該在幼兒園的孩子們面前那樣的罵人。
evidence (n) 證據 KK [ˋɛvədəns] IPA /ˈev.ə.dəns/ Def: one or more reasons for believing that something is or is not true
Example sentence: His attorney brought along a piece of important evidence to support the trial. 他的律師帶了一份重要的證據來支援審判。
Outro
So now we know that many people are misguided in thinking that by displaying success, others will find them charming. For me, I’m naturally drawn to people that are kind and modest, and these people are the most charming in my view.
Charming people are confident enough to even show a little bit of vulnerability. It’s okay to admit a weakness or failure. We don’t need to always try and win at everything to gain popularity. On the contrary, It is in fact our problems and failures that make us charming. Because no one’s perfect and by revealing that will make people feel more closely connected to you.
If you want to learn how to be a charming person, you can try and listen more and talk less. Charming people already know what they know, and they want to know what you know. By listening to people and be genuinely interested in what they’re saying, will make people feel important and respected.
This brings me to the end of my episode. Thanks for sticking around until now. Don’t forget to record your sentence and I hope you’ll all have a lovely week!
