Intro:

Welcome back to another episode of Pronunciation Challenge! I’m your host, Jenny. I’d like to tell you a story which happened many many years ago when I was still living in Australia. So, I was driving alone one day and I tried to make a U-turn in my car. My timing probably wasn’t well calculated and a ute crashed into me. A ute is what Australians call a utility truck, so it was pretty big in size. At the time I drove a small hatchback Hyundai car and after the big impact happened, my car flew forward and crashed into an electricity pole. My side of the door was completely damaged so I had to crawl out from the passenger side door. It was a pretty dramatic incident and I still remember that when I tried to talk, I even spat out shattered glass pieces from my mouth!

I had to say goodbye to my beloved little car because it was a write-off (if a car is written off after an accident, it means it’s no longer safe to drive, or uneconomical to repair). For a few weeks, I kept getting flashbacks of the incident. My mum lent me her car and the first time I drove again by myself, I felt shivers down my spine every time a big vehicle passed by in the next lane. Feeling so overwhelmed, I even got lost driving home on a route I used to take on a daily basis. I am pretty sure this was or pretty close to what our video is talking about today - PTSD, which is the acronym of post-traumatic stress disorder. PTSD is a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event.

If you’d like to find out more details about PTSD, do watch the video later. But first, let me pause here and go over our pronunciation challenge.

Sentence:
These can be everyday sensations that aren't inherently dangerous but prompt powerful physical and emotional reactions.
這些可能是不具危脅性的日常感知,但卻會激發患者強烈的生理和情緒反應。

Pronunciation tips:
sensation (has three syllables)
inherently (UK and US versions are a little bit different)
prompt (is a one-syllable word and read as it is spelt)

I’ll read the sentence one more time a tiny bit slower.

Now moving on, here are our three vocabulary words.

Vocabulary:
1. sensation (n)  KK [sɛnˋseʃən]   IPA  /senˈseɪ.ʃən/
Def: 感覺;知覺 the ability to feel something physically, especially by touching, or a physical feeling that results from this ability

Example sentence:
Putting my feet inside a fish spa was an odd, tingling sensation.
把我的腳放在魚療池裡是一種奇怪的、刺痛的感覺。

2. inherently  (adv)   KK: [ɪnˋhɪrəntlɪ]   IPA: /ɪnˈhɪr.ənt.li/
Def: 與生俱來地 in a way that exists as a natural or basic part of something

Example sentence:
It is inherently dangerous to be a firefighter.
成為一名消防員本質上是危險的。

3. prompt  (v) KK: [prɑmpt]  IPA: /prɑːmpt/
Def: 促使(某人)決定說(或做)某事 to make something happen

Example sentence:
I don't know what prompted him to leave so suddenly.
我不知道是甚麼促使他突然離開的。

Outro:

Alright guys, I almost forgot to tell you that even though I went through that horrible car accident, I miraculously came out in one piece without any physical injuries. I did suffer from PTSD and that took some time to heal. Writing about this story from many years ago brings back emotional memories and I’m starting to think maybe I never healed from it completely, because I always feel like I can’t relax while driving here in Taiwan. Or perhaps that’s just because driving in Taiwan is a completely different story (haha, if you know what I mean).

Have you ever gone through PTSD? Perhaps some of the tips given by the video may help relieve your symptoms. I seem to be getting these rather depressing topics a lot lately, next week’s topic will hopefully be a bit lighter and more fun. So until then, take care guys and don’t forget to record your challenge sentence. I look forward to seeing you again soon. Bye for now!
