Ken's transcript!
Hi folks, welcome to the show. How’s everyone enjoying the summer? You know, summer is actually a good time for thinking. Because when it’s too hot to hang out, what’s better than staying home, grabbing a cold drink, lounging in your favorite spot and… just pondering and doing nothing? One interesting topic to think about is what if the internet stopped working? (Staticky) It would be difficult to do anything...
Yes, that’s what it feels like if the internet suddenly stopped working. However, a lot of different things would be affected as well. For instance, no more text messaging: you would have to actually write a letter to someone or maybe send them a fax, which means no more gossiping or sending unimportant messages because it would be a waste of time and paper. Also, if you’re traveling in a new city, prepare to hold a map in your hand because Google Maps would be in a deep slumber, what a nightmare! Annnnd most importantly, without internet service, big companies like Apple, Google, Amazon and Facebook would soon lose money and eventually go bankrupt, because no demand, no supply, then no profit, and what’s next for the financial market? Yes, you’ve guessed it, a catastrophic global recession.
And now it’s time for our sentence of the day.
If the Internet suddenly flatlined, social media users would start calling each other on the phone, overloading the working telecommunication systems.
And now let’s take a look at the vocab we’ve got here:
1. flatline (v) to die
Ex: The patient was fading fast, and doctors expected him to flatline before the night was over.
2. overload (v) to put too many things in or on something
Ex: Try not to overload yourself with work.
3. telecommunication (n) (tele/communi/cation) “telecom”
communication over a distance by cable, telegraph, telephone, or broadcasting.
Ex: CHT, or the Chunghwa Telecom, is the largest telecommunication company in Taiwan.
telescope.microscope / telephone.television /telemarketing
Okie-dokie, and now it’s time for the segment that’s gonna help you save some money for speaking practice so you don’t get nervous when you take IELTS or TOEFL exams. It’s Question Time!

Q1. Before the internet was among our lives, what was your biggest interest, or what did you like to do the most in your free time? Do you still do it now?
Q2. Name one thing that you can’t live without. For example, Air Conditioning (AC).
You know, it wouldn’t be the end of the world if the internet stopped operating.
Though it might be hard to imagine,
just ask how your parents lived when they were younger, without any internet service.
Miracles of mankind and remarkable accomplishments were made for thousands of years running before the birth of the internet.
Maybe things are best to be simple.
Interesting.
Well, thanks for listening
And I’ll see you guys again next week.
Ciao!
