Hi guys, I’m back! Not sure if any of you noticed that I had someone fill in for me last week, but I’m happy to be back here again! I was really sick and spent a lot of time resting at home. How many days can you go without leaving the house at all? Does it feel suffocating when you can’t go out? I thought I was enjoying my solitude at first, but after a whole week, I was dying to go out. 

In case you didn’t know, psychology says that we human beings are an ultra-social species and most people have a strong need to be social and a need to belong. I know, however, there are people who choose to be alone and enjoy being alone. Solitude can be a good thing sometimes and it helps people to focus and recharge. Being alone and feeling alone are two different things, so it’s got a lot to do with how your mind perceives it. 

Moving to a new city, changing jobs, getting over a divorce or if you have recently lost a loved one can be very challenging times. If you feel lonely, it could lead to mental health risks such as depression. Let’s talk about ways to combat loneliness later in our episode, but let’s first check out our pronunciation challenge sentence.

Here are some tips to prevent loneliness: 

1. Seek meaningful relationships with people that share similar interests or values with you. It’s not the quantity but the quality of relationships that will make you happy. 
2. Attend group activities such as a local running club, art class, volunteering work or anything that you enjoy doing. You’re also likely to make new connections with like-minded people from these situations.
3. Apart from building new connections, you can also try to improve your existing relationships with family and friends. Sit down, talk over things and perhaps mending a broken relationship might be worthwhile of your time. 
4. Make plans! I find that making plans help me a lot when I get caught up in negative thoughts. When you are feeling sad, you may not want to do anything, but after you make plans, whether it is a holiday to the seaside, a visit to an art exhibit or even just an appointment with your hair stylist, you’ll have something nice to look forward to instead of focusing on your loneliness.  

I hope some of these tips will help you if you are ever feeling a bit lonely. Remember that the loneliness you’re experiencing will not last forever, but YOU need to make an effort and do something about it.
