Intro: Hi, everyone. I’m Tera, and this is VoiceTube’s Pronunciation Challenge. Today we’re going to talk about memes. According to Merriam-Webster, "meme" means an amusing or interesting item (such as a captioned picture or video) or genre of items that is spread widely online, especially through social media. As you can see, memes and the Internet are strongly related. Hence, the protagonist of the meme "Disappointed Black Guy" is here to tell the story of how he accidentally became a meme, and on the other hand, how the Internet has affected his life. And now, let’s take a look at the sentence of the day.
Featured sentence: I would get away with it a lot of the time, but some sometime down the line, I realized that pretending like this person is not me was affecting other people negatively.
Tips: 1. get away with it: there’s a linking between "get" and "away", as well as "with" and "it". 2. realized: the stress is on the first syllable. Notice that "ea" should be pronounced separately as /ɪə/. 3. pretending: three syllables with the stress on the second one. “pre” is /prɪ/, “tend” is /tɛnd/. Adding up the final "ing", we get "pre-tend-ing". 4. negatively: four syllables with the stress on the first one. The vowel of "ne" is a mid-front unrounded vowel, /nɛ/. Do not pronounce it as /næ/.
Vocab: 1. realize (v.) KK [ˋrɪə͵laɪz] IPA /ˈriː.ə.laɪz/ def: to understand a situation, sometimes suddenly 領悟;明白 Not until his girlfriend left him did Johnny realize how selfish he used to be. 一直到他女朋友離開他時,Johnny才明白以前的自己有多自私。
2. pretend (v.) KK [prɪˋtɛnd] IPA /prɪˈtend/ def: to behave as if something is true when you know that it is not, especially in order to deceive people or as a game 假裝 After a big fight, Lucy and Stacy pretend they don’t know each other。 大吵一架後,Lucy 和 Stacy 假裝他們不認識彼此。
3. affect (v.) KK [əˋfɛkt] IPA /əˈfekt/ def: to have an influence on someone or something, or to cause a change in someone or something 影響 Family education can greatly affect one’s thoughts and behaviors. 家庭教育會大大的影響一個人的思想與行為。
Outro: The explosive growth of information and communication technology in the past decades has led to a prevalence of the use of memes. Memes are now everywhere since we are in an Internet-based world. It’s for sure that the Internet brings much convenience to life; nevertheless, the Internet shouldn’t control you. Alright, and that’s the end of today’s episode. If you would like to know more about the stories behind different famous memes, including "Woman Yelling at a Cat", "Success Kid", "Blinking White Guy", BuzzFeedVideo on YouTube presents a series of related videos. You can check them out there. Otherwise, I’ll see you in the next episode.
