Intro:

G’day VoiceTubers and welcome back to my channel. Today our video explains what eating disorder means. Have you ever experienced a sudden loss of appetite? Maybe you received some really bad news or perhaps you just experienced a breakup with your girlfriend or boyfriend. Your body responds to the way your think, feel, and act. When I am in a bad mood or under stress, not only does my appetite change, but even my skin tends to break out more.

The Wikipedia explanation of an eating disorder is a mental disorder defined by abnormal eating behaviours that negatively affect a person’s physical or mental health.

There was one girl at my high school who was obsessed with looking skinny. It was actually terrifying because I could see the shape of her bones on her legs but she was still complaining about not being skinny enough.

It’s important to educate kids from a young age to develop healthy eating behaviours. As adults, we should teach kids about eating a balanced diet instead of going on a diet or complaining about our own bodies around them.

OK, let’s take a moment to go over our pronunciation challenge sentence.

Sentence:
Most people who experience them are severely critical of themselves and report many self-perceived flaws.
多數經歷過這些的人對自己都特別嚴厲,並列舉許多自認為的缺陷。

Vocabulary:

•
severely (adv.) 嚴重;嚴厲地
KK[səˋvɪrlɪ] / IPA /səˈvɪr.li/
very seriously

Example:
The back of my car was severely damaged after the accident.
事故發生後,我的車子後部嚴重受損。

•
critical (adj.) 批評;批判的
KK[ˋkrɪtɪk!] / IPA /ˈkrɪt̬.ɪ.kəl/
saying that someone or something is bad or wrong

She is always so critical of herself when it comes to her looks.
當談到她的長相時,她總是對自己如此的挑剔。

•
perceive (v.) 認為;看待;意識到
KK KK[pɚˋsiv] / IPA /pərˈsiv/
to come to an opinion about something, or have a belief about something

Example:
She is so concerned about how others perceive her that she cannot just be herself.
她太在意別人如何看待她,以至於她不能自在的做自己。

Outro:

Eating disorders often develop in the teen and young adult years. The most common eating disorders are as follows:

1) Anorexia (an-o-REK-see-uh) Nervosa – This is often simply called Anorexia. People with Anorexia go into the extremes to control their weight or shape and are in denial of being seriously underweight.

2) Bulimia (boo-LEE-me-uh)  Nervosa - Often referred to as Bulimia, is when you have episodes of eating large amounts of food in a short time until painfully full, then trying to get rid of the extra calories in an unhealthy way, for example, by vomiting or using laxatives.

3) Binge eating disorder – This is when you eat way too much food (binge) even when you’re not hungry. You don’t try to lose weight like those that have anorexia, but because you are embarrassed about losing control over your behaviour, you binge eat in secret.

Unfortunately, a lot of people with eating disorders may not think they need to seek treatment.
In fact, eating disorders are associated with mental illnesses. Some people may suffer from this due to genetics which might increase the chance of abnormal brain chemicals in the body. Whereas some people may have psychological and emotional problems which lead them to abnormal eating habits. If there’s someone you know that suffers from an eating disorder, hopefully, you can encourage him or her to get some professional help from a doctor.

Alright, and that’s all we have time for today. Don’t forget to record your sentence and I’ll see you again next week!
