“Stay away from negative people, they have a problem for every solution.” Albert Einstein

Hello, citizens of VoiceTube! It’s Hugh again, back with another episode of the Pronunciation Challenge! I’m always grateful to be hosting another episode for everyone and thanks for always tuning in to practice with me. So what are we talking about today? We’re talking about 10 types of people you need to avoid! I’m not going to cover all 10 types, (I’ll leave that for the video) but I will talk about some philosophies behind the overall message of this video.
Have you listeners ever heard of the term, “The apple never falls far from the tree?” If not, it means that a child usually has the same personality traits that their parents have. Who you spend your time with, especially when you’re a child can heavily influence the type of person you’ll one day become. This is also true with friends. Surround yourself with awful people and chances are, you may become one too. Of course, there are people who overcome these situations but they are also the exception. Let’s get to the featured sentence before we talk about ways you can deal with bad influences in your life.

Today’s featured sentence:
In order to grow, you have to surround yourself with trustworthy people who will support you and offer candid and honest opinions.

I’ll say that again.

In order to grow, you have to surround yourself with trustworthy people who will support you and offer candid and honest opinions.

Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.

For the first word, we have
Surround
Two syllables.
“SU” sounds more like S and R together, “SR”. “ROUND”, sounds exactly as it is, “Round”. Surround.

Next up, we have
Trustworthy
Three syllables
“TRUST” is what you hear, “Trust”, like “I trust you.” “WOR” has a “ER” combination sound and “THY” has a long E sound with a TH sound in front. Trustworthy.

Lastly, we have,
Honest
Two syllables.
Forget the H here and go straight into “ON”, like “On and off.”. “NEST” has a short U sound and actually sounds like “US”, like “They didn’t get back to us yet.”. Honest.

Moving onto Vocabulary!

The first word is:
1. surround
Definition
to be everywhere around something
Used in a sentence you could say,
“I always make sure to surround myself with successful people so I can always be improving.”

Next word,
2. trustworthy
Definition
able to be trusted
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“We have to make sure he/she is a trustworthy person before we allow him/her to enter our group.”

And lastly,
3. candid
Definition:
honest and telling the truth, especially about something difficult or painful
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“I am quite candid with my friends.”

Ok, so let’s get to figuring out how we know if someone is good for your life or not. First off, are they being a good example? Do they practice what they preach? (preach means teaching) Like, would I take basketball advice from someone who doesn’t even play basketball? Make sure they know what they’re talking about. Some people try to tell you how to live your life when they barely have their life together. Be careful who you take advice from! If you notice that someone just wants to criticize (criticize means telling someone what’s wrong with them) because it makes them feel better, quickly cut that person off. Cutting someone off doesn’t literally mean cutting them like with a knife. It means to cut off communication with them. Just stop talking to them. I think we all realize that we can’t be friends with everyone as we get older and that having a lot of friends doesn’t really mean much later in life. It’s the quality of friends or family members that is most important. Also, even if someone is a family member, make sure to find out if they’re good for you as well. You don’t have to do anything just because a family member says you have to. Know where to draw the line!
Ok, this was a longer episode than anticipated. I tend to be long-winded meaning I talk a lot. Make sure to get those recordings in if you haven’t done so already. Until the next episode, see ya!
