Intelligent life on other planets? I'm not even sure there is on earth! - Albert Einstein
Greetings, Voicetubers. My name is Hugh, I come from planet earth, and I’ll be honored to be your host for today’s Pronunciation Challenge. Did I sound like an Alien just now? I’m working on my voice acting because there seems to be a lot of work in that field lately! It’d be my dream to be in a video game one day! Anyways, let's get back to the topic at hand. Life on other planets?! There are people out there who truly believe that planet earth, our planet, is the only planet with life! Do I agree with this? Heck, no! The universe is so big, there’s no way there is not another planet that can sustain (sustain means to make stronger or support) life! How come we haven’t heard from these planets yet though? Let’s get to the featured sentence first before we find out!
Today’s featured sentence:
So, detecting alien intelligence is... is really tantalizing, but it's also tragic 'cause we'll probably never be able to communicate with them if we did discover it.
I’ll say that again.
So, detecting alien intelligence is... is really tantalizing, but it's also tragic 'cause we'll probably never be able to communicate with them if we did discover it.
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have
detecting
Three syllables.
“DE” has a short U sound. “TEC” has a short E sound and “TING” has your typical “I N G” sound with a T sound in front. Detecting.
Next up, we have
Intelligence
Four syllables
“IN” is like “in and out”. “TELL” sounds the same as “I’m telling on you.” “LI” has a short U sound and “GENCE”, imagine it being spelt “JINZ”. Intelligence.
Lastly, we have,
Tantalizing
Four syllables.
“TAN” sounds the same as a sun tan. “TA” has a short U sound. “LI” has a long I sound and “ZING” has your typical “I N G” sound with a Z sound in front. Tantalizing.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. detect
Definition
to notice something that is partly hidden or not clear, or to discover something, especially using a special method
Used in a sentence you could say,
“There are some dogs at the airport that can detect drugs on a person from smell alone.”
Next word,
2. tantalizing
Definition
Something that is tan
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“That new burger at McDonald’s looks tantalizing.”
And lastly,
3. tragic
Definition:
very sad, often involving death and suffering
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story.”
Water! That’s how we know that another planet can sustain life! It does make sense though. Too hot and the water vaporizes and if too cold, the water will freeze. Water means that the temperature is just right. That’s why they call it the Goldilocks Zone. You listeners know who Goldilocks is right? For those that don’t know, Goldilocks is from a classic children’s story about a girl who sneaks into a house where three bears live. She helps herself to their food and goes through three bowls. One is too hot, the other is too cold, and the third is just right. That’s why we use this term to explain planets that are just right! I really wonder if we’ll ever meet aliens in our lifetimes!
Alright, times up for today. Hope you learned a thing or two from today’s episode! Make sure to get those recordings in! Until the next episode, see ya!
