As if all that weren't enough, chronic stress has even more ways it can sabotage your health, including acne, hair loss, sexual dysfunction, headaches, muscle tension, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, and irritability.

“The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.” - William James
Hello Voicetubers, welcome back to the Pronunciation Challenge. My name is Hugh and I’ll be your host for today’s episode. Today, I’ll be presenting a short video about stress. Did you guys know the amount (how much something is, like the total) of damage (physical harm) it can do to the body? This video breaks down exactly how stress does that. It’s very interesting and also eye-opening as to how we live our lives. Perhaps this can be our motivation to relax and not worry so much. This is something I definitely learned during this pandemic. All my plans went out the window (like everyone else) and I just learned to, as we native speakers like to say - go with the flow. Let’s attack the featured sentence before I share with you listeners how I went with the flow.
Today’s featured sentence: As if all that weren't enough, chronic stress has even more ways it can sabotage your health, including acne, hair loss, sexual dysfunction, headaches, muscle tension, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, and irritability.
I’ll say that again.
As if all that weren't enough, chronic stress has even more ways it can sabotage your health, including acne, hair loss, sexual dysfunction, headaches, muscle tension, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, and irritability.
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have sabotage Three syllables. “SA” has a short A sound. “BO” has a short U sound and “Tage” sounds exactly like Taj, like the Taj Mahal in India. Sabotage.
Next up, we have acne Two syllables. I chose this because the spelling can throw you off. “AC” sounds like “ACK” like “I’ll be back!”. “NE” actually has a long E sound. Acne.
Lastly, we have, irritability Six syllables. “IR” sounds like the body part, ear. “RI” has a short U sound. “Ta” also has a short U sound. “BIL” sounds like the name Bill. “LI” has a short i sound and “TY” sounds like tea, like the tea people drink. Irritability.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is: 1. chronic (especially of a disease or something bad) continuing for a long time Used in a sentence you could say, “I’m going to the doctors for my chronic headaches.”
Next word, 2. sabotage Definition to damage or destroy equipment, weapons, or buildings in order to prevent the success of an enemy or competitor Used in a sentence, you could say: “Amber Heard tried to sabotage Johnny Depp’s career.”
And lastly, 3. irritable Definition: becoming annoyed very easily Used in a sentence, you could say: “Watching Amber Heard on the witness stand, makes me irritable.”
After watching the video, do you realize how much damage stress can cause now? It’s pretty scary and I went through this myself. I was losing sleep and getting sick all the time. This was before the pandemic and I was getting tired of feeling this way so I started doing some research. First off, I had to learn that you cannot control the things that happen to you but you can control how you react. I can choose to sit there and be sad and complain or I can take the hit, get back up and get better. That was the first step. Changing my mindset. The second step was meditating which I’m sure all you listeners know why that’s good for you. Lastly, I started taking cold showers in the morning. Trust me, I know how tough this is but this is actually good for stress reduction (the action of making something less) because you willingly put yourself in a stressful situation (the cold shower) and you don’t run away from it. It teaches you how to deal with discomfort. I find these few things helpful for me in dealing with stress. How do you listeners deal with stress? Please share some tips below, I’m always taking notes.
Ok, that about does it for today’s episode. Get your recordings in if you haven’t done so already. I’ll see everyone again in the next episode. Bye.
