Hello, VoiceTubers. This is Nina with another episode of pronunciation challenge. Mass shootings are one of the most serious social problems in America right now. Many people have tried to solve this problem for a long time, but it doesn't seem to work. But, regarding the issue of guns, the United States already has existing regulations which are background checks. A background check is required before people purchase a firearm. So why is the current regulation unable to effectively prevent mass shootings? What's wrong with the current gun-buying system in America? Let's watch today's video to learn about how people purchase a gun in the USA and how we can reduce the number of gun homicides and gun suicides.
But first, let’s get to the sentence of the day.
Sentence
Nothing about a licensing system will prevent a law-abiding citizen from going through the process and obtaining a firearm.
Pronunciation tips
1. licensing (the pronunciations of "i" and "cen")
2. law-abiding (the pronunciation of "abi")
3. obtaining (the pronunciations of "o" and "tai")
Vocabulary
1. licensing (n.) /ˈlaɪ.sən.sɪŋ/ [ˋlaɪsnsɪŋ]
the act of giving people official permission to do, have, or sell something
Eg. You have to go through the licensing process to get a license.
2. law-abiding (adj.) /ˈlɑː.əˌbaɪ.dɪŋ/ [ˋlɔə͵baɪdɪŋ]
someone who is law-abiding obeys the law
Eg. She's always been a law-abiding citizen; there's no way she will end up in jail.
3. firearm (n.) /ˈfaɪr.ɑːrm/ [ˋfaɪr͵ɑrm]
a small arms weapon, like a gun
Eg. Why are you carrying a firearm around?
Alright, that's all for today's episode. Every time there's a school shooting or a mass shooting, there is a debate about whether people should have the right to keep and bear arms. And there's never a way to satisfy everyone. However, studies have found that the licensing system can effectively screen out people who shouldn't have guns and reduce impulsive gun purchases. Most importantly, it won't stop law-abiding citizens from getting guns. What amazes me is that this system can minimize impulsive firearm purchases through a relatively complex checking process and firearm safety lectures. At least that's something other regulations can't do right now. Do you think this is a good solution to the existing gun problem in the US? Let me know your answers in the comment section with your recordings. Hope you enjoyed today's episode. I'm Nina. See you next time.
