Hi, Voicetubers! How are things? Tera here for another episode. Welcome to the Cuban economy. As the one and only country in the western hemisphere that imposed a communist system, Cuba in the past didn’t allow its people to own their private businesses. Actually, 80% of the Cuban labor market work for the government. They get salaries and distributed living supplies from the government as well. Accordingly, in Cuba, there’s no competitiveness, no concepts of customer service, no commercial advertisements. However, as the country’s financial crisis gradually exists, their government is forced to open up the market, permitting a small number of civilians to be self-employed. In order to make more money, people who were former doctors and engineers quit their jobs and start their own small businesses. So how much money can they earn by doing so? Check out the video! And now it's time for our daily sentences.

Featured sentence: The government realized this was becoming a problem in the 90s, and started giving out private licenses, fueling a small but growing private sector.

Tips:
government: three syllables with the stress on the first one. "go" sounds like "ga", "er" is a /ɚ/ sound, and then put the /v/, /n/ before and after it, making is "vern". Lastly, the vowel in "ment" is a schwa /mənt/. Bring them together, "go-vern-ment".
realize: two syllables with the stress on the first syllable, which is, "rea" /riə/. As for "lize", it is /laɪz/. Notice that it is /z/ but not /s/.
license: two syllables with the stress on the first one as well. First, "li" /laɪ/ and then "cense" is pretty much the same as "sense", but a schwa sound /ə/, "cense". "li-cense".
private: two syllables with the stress on the first syllable, also. "pri" rhymes with above-mentioned /laɪ/ in "license", so it is /praɪ/. "vate" is a schwa sound as well, /vət/, not /veɪt/, okay? "pri-vate"

Vocab:
government (n.) KK [ˋgʌvɚnmənt] IPA /ˈɡʌv.ɚn.mənt/
def: the group of people who officially control a country
政府
The Ukraine government along with its civilians are striving to fight against Russian troops.
烏克蘭政府連同其百姓,正努力的反抗俄羅斯軍隊。

realize (v.) KK [ˋrɪə͵laɪz] IPA /ˈriː.ə.laɪz/
def: to understand a situation
領悟、了解
After recovering from a serious illness, she realizes that nothing is more important than health.
從一場大病康復,她領悟到沒有什麼事能比健康更重要。

license (n.) KK [ˋlaɪsns] IPA /ˈlaɪ.səns/
證照、牌照
def: an official permission to do or have something
Due to DUI (driving under the influence), the man’s car license was suspended.
因為酒駕,那個男人的駕照被暫時吊銷。

Outro:
Besides taxi drivers, another occupation is now rising up in Cuba, too. And that is, CASA. CASA is private accommodation or homestay in Cuba, very similar to a bed and breakfast. Same as taxi drivers, you’ll have to get a legal license to start this business. Once you are admitted by the government, you become a member of the petite bourgeoisie. Around 40 pesos have to be handed over to the government every month per room. Furthermore, the government levies taxes at the end of each year, and it’s about 10% of your annual turnover. A Cuban woman states that the income of an accountant working in the bank is 40 pesos a month, but she can earn 200 pesos from CASA a month. Intending to develop tourism but not being able to build hotels and villas, the Cuban government in any way is the biggest winner. If you want to know more about it, please go onto Google and type in "CASA", there should be tons of information for your reference. Take care!
