Intro:
Hey, VoiceTubers! Do you like drinking coffee? I crave my coffee every morning. It is energizing and it helps my brain function better. However, coffee is not just a drink, a whole culture revolves around it. It also has a very long and interesting history and it is popular all over the world. Think about all the different situations you enjoy having coffee. A lot of them are social - grabbing a coffee with friend(s), coffee at a work meeting, coffee with snacks or food, etc. Companies like Starbucks really know how to sell the EXPERIENCE of coffee, not just the drink itself. For example, we know that it’s cheaper to make your own coffee at home to take out, and some people do that. But a lot of people prefer to pay more to sit in a coffee shop and have their coffees over there. That’s probably because it’s more fun to sit around other people, listen to music, and enjoy the experience. Starbucks and other coffee chains are not just selling coffee, but also a range of related merchandise, like mugs, drink bottles, coffee bean grinders, filters, and so on. Head over to our video later and learn about the history of Starbucks.
Meanwhile, here is our sentence of the day:
Sentence -
No company is immune from the impact of the recession, not even the one-time darling of Wall Street, Starbucks.
沒有公司能免受經濟衰退的影響,就算是一度成為華爾街寵兒的星巴克也不例外。

Pronunciation Tips:
the impact ("The" is often pronounced "thee" before a vowel sound and "thuh" before a consonant sound. This is not a rule. It's just a tendency to assist with the flow of speech)
immune
recession

Vocabulary:
1. immune KK[ɪˋmjun] IPA//ɪˈmjuːn/
adj. 免於...的 not affected or upset by a particular type of behavior or emotion
adj. 免疫的 protected against a particular disease by particular substances in the blood
Example:
Since she got sick, her immune system has been down.
自從她生病之後,她的免疫系統下降了。

2. recession KK[rɪˋsɛʃən] IPA//rɪˈseʃ.ən/
n. (經濟)衰退期 a period when the economy of a country is not successful and conditions for business are bad
Example:
Analysts say that the repercussions from the Russia Ukraine war expect to lead to a much deeper recession than the one caused by Covid.
分析人士表示,俄烏戰爭的影響預計將導致比新冠疫情更嚴重的經濟衰退。

3. darling KK[ˋdɑrlɪŋ] IPA//ˈdɑːr-/
adj. 寵愛的,心愛的 used when talking to someone you love, for example in a letter, to say that you love them very much
n. 親愛的人 a person who is very much loved or liked

Example:
Thanks, darling! I absolutely adore these flowers.
親愛的,謝謝! 我超級喜歡這些花。

Outro:
The interesting thing about Starbucks is how its founders actually took a simple idea and developed it into this successful business. It might look simple now, looking back at the process, but at the time it was actually a revolution. Up until then, coffee was just a drink people used to enjoy at a restaurant or at home, but these new coffee shops offered a new experience, with coffee as its main focus. The same thing happened with “pho”, which is a kind of Vietnamese soup, typically considered as common street food in Vietnam. One day someone decided to open a chain that sells only pho, and it was an immediate success. Dozens of branches started opening up everywhere and it took off almost immediately. So what was the secret? The soup was probably not much better than the ones sold outside at the street stalls, and the price was higher. But it was a new experience. The restaurants were cleaner, they had new and modern interior decorations, they offered restrooms and air conditioning, so people were willing to pay extra for that. So the owners took a simple national street food and gave it a facelift. And it worked!
