Russian Invasion Met With Protests, Resistance and International Sanctions
On the 24th of February, Russian military forces invaded the neighboring country of Ukraine in what Russian President Vladimir Putin has called "a special military operation" needed to prevent Western influence from spreading near Russia's western border.
Last week, US officials said Russia's progress had been slower than the nation's government thought it would be. There have been challenges to Russia’s plans, such as tough resistance from Ukrainian forces, heavier-than-expected losses on the Russian side, not to mention the sheer size of Ukraine, which is about 1.6 times bigger than Japan. The decision to invade Ukraine has been fiercely criticized by numerous countries around the world. Ukraine is getting weapons, equipment, and various forms of support from the US and several other nations. Some of those countries have also put limits on their international business with Russia in an effort to hurt its economy.
However, critics say sanctions alone are not enough to stop Russia, that they take too long, and that the ones that have been announced weren't put in place soon enough to deter the Russian invasion.
There is also criticism within Russia itself. Despite the threat of getting arrested, hundreds, and possibly thousands of people have been protesting. Russians who sympathize with Ukraine have placed flowers outside the Ukrainian embassy in Moscow.
Russia has said it is not targeting civilian areas, but some of them have been damaged.
Biden’s Nomination of Judge Jackson to US Supreme Court Makes History
Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson has officially been nominated to the US Supreme Court. President Joe Biden, who pledged to nominate a black woman to the court two years ago, made the announcement on the 25th of February, making history by nominating the first black woman to serve on the nation's highest court. Judge Jackson currently sits on the US Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Before that, she served as a federal judge for nearly a decade.
Born in Washington and raised in Miami, Jackson wrote in her high school yearbook that she aimed to go into law and eventually have a judicial appointment. She followed through on her goals, graduating from Harvard, both undergraduate and law school, before serving as a federal public defender.
Now, it’s up to the US Senate to decide whether to confirm her as the newest associate justice. Currently, the Senate is divided between 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans. Although some Republicans are concerned about the support that Judge Jackson has received from "radical liberal groups", last June three Republicans voted for Jackson’s confirmation to her current job.
Senate Democrats hope to hold the vote in mid-April. If the vote results in a tie, Vice President Kamala Harris, a Democrat, would cast the deciding vote to confirm Jackson.
And now, our Sentence of the Day: Her liberal ideology would not change the balance of the court, yet her presence on the bench would mark a major milestone for the court and the country. 她的自由主義意識形態還不會改變法院的平衡。她出現在法官席上將標誌著法院和國家的一個重要里程碑。
Let’s look at some vocabulary from the sentence:
ideology KK /͵aɪdɪˋɑlədʒɪ/ IPA /ˌaɪ.diˈɑː.lə.dʒi/ a set of beliefs or principles, especially one on which a political system, party, or organization is based (尤指作為政治體制、政黨或政治組織基礎的)思想(體系),意識形態 i.e. Despite years of evidence highlighting their failings, dogmatic adherence to dated ideology persists. 儘管多年來有證據表明他們失敗,但武斷地堅持過時的意識形態仍然存在。

milestone KK /ˋmaɪl͵ston/ IPA /ˈmaɪl.stoʊn/ an important event in the development or history of something or in someone's life 里程碑;重大事件;轉捩點 i.e. We feel immensely proud at reaching this milestone and it's also been quite humbling to receive so many messages of congratulation. 我們為達到這一里程碑感到無比自豪,收到這麼多的祝賀信息也讓我們感到非常謙卑。
Today's CNN10 video left me with some gray-area questions.
Will economic sanctions be enough to pressure Russia or will Russia up the ante in this steadily escalating conflict?
With the current US Senate so evenly split between the two parties, what will the vote on Judge Jackson reveal about the political divide in America?
I’m Leila, and that’s the news for now.
