Intro:

Have you ever found yourself on your own at a party or gathering, wondering what you should do, or who you should talk to, or what you should say? If so, you’ll likely find today’s video quite useful, as it gives a lot of great tips on meeting new people and leaving a positive impression. I mean, who doesn’t want more friends, right? So I strongly suggest that you go check it out! But for now, you know what time it is. That’s right! It’s time to take a look at today’s featured sentence:

Sentence:
When exiting a conversation, interrupt yourself, not them. Make it clear that you enjoyed the conversation, and that you have a reason for leaving.
當你想退出談話時,打斷自己而不是別人。向大家表明你聊得很愉快,但有事得先走。

Pronunciation Tips:
Blended words: that you (sounds like tha-choo)
Exiting - (instead of x sounding like ‘ks’, it sounds more like ‘gz’ so it sounds like egg-zitting)
Reason - long e, schwa sound

Vocabulary:
1. exit (v;n) KK[ˋɛksɪt] IPA/ˈɛksɪt/
V. 離開 to leave
N.出口,安全門 the door through which you might leave a building or large vehicle, or the act of leaving something, especially a theatre stage

The meaning for ‘exit’ is simple - it means to leave. For example, I could say “Please use the rear doors to exit the bus.” or, another example “If you hear the fire alarm, you must exit the building immediately.”

Now, that meaning uses ‘exit’ as a verb, which is how it’s used in the video and in the featured sentence. But ‘exit’ can also be used as a noun, meaning the door or gateway by which you might leave a building. Here is an example: “Guting station has nine exits. The restaurant is not far from Exit 2.”

2. interrupt (v.) KK[͵ɪntəˋrʌpt] IPA/ˌɪntəˈrʌpt/
打斷 to stop a person from speaking for a short period by something you say or do

To interrupt someone means to do something that stops them from speaking. Here’s an example sentence: “The professor’s lecture was interrupted when a student’s phone started ringing.”

3. clear (adj.) KK [klɪr] IPA/klɪə/
明白的;清楚的 easy to understand, hear, read, or see

As it's used in the example sentence, ‘clear’ means easy to understand. Here’s an example sentence, “Harold is a new employee who’s just getting started, so make sure he has clear instructions on what he needs to do.” ‘Clear’ can also mean easy to read or see. For example, “When I take my glasses off, everything looks blurry. But when I put them back on, everything’s clear again.”

Outro

Well, that just about wraps things up for today’s pronunciation challenge. When I meet new people, I find it best to fight the urge to talk about myself. By making the effort to listen to others and ask thoughtful questions, I find that at the very least, I learn things! But how about you? What are your thoughts and suggestions about meeting new people? Let me know in the comments below, and don’t forget to do your recording! I’m Jonathan for VoiceTube. I’ll catch you next time!

Have you ever found yourself on your own at a party or gathering(聚會n.), wondering what you should do, or who you should talk to, or what you should say? If so, you’ll likely find today’s video quite useful, as it gives a lot of great tips on meeting new people and leaving a positive impression(/ɪmˈpreʃ.ən/印象). I mean, who doesn’t want more friends, right? So I strongly suggest that you go check it out! But for now, you know what time it is. That’s right! It’s time to take a look at today’s featured sentence:

When exiting(/ˈeɡ.zɪt/離開v.) a conversation(/ˌkɑːn.vɚˈseɪ.ʃən/交談n.), interrupt(/ˌɪn.t̬əˈrʌpt/短暫停止,中斷v.) yourself, not them. Make it clear(明瞭的) that you enjoyed the conversation, and that you have a reason(/ˈriː.zən/理由) for leaving.
當你想退出交談,暫停你自己談話,而不是別人的。清楚表明與他們聊得很開心,但是你有事必須離開。

1.1 exit /ˈɛksɪt/ /ˈeɡ.zɪt/ v. 離開(建築物或大型交通工具)The meaning for ‘exit’ is simple - it means to leave.
☻︎ Please use the rear(/rɪr/後方的) doors to exit the bus.
☻︎ If you hear the fire alarm(火災警報), you must exit the building immediately.

1.2 exit (n.) (建築物或大型交通工具的)出口,安全門;(尤指演員)退場 the door through which you might leave a building or large vehicle, or the act of leaving something, especially a theatre stage

Now, that meaning uses ‘exit’ as a verb, which is how it’s used in the video and in the featured sentence. But ‘exit’ can also be used as a noun, meaning the door or gateway(通道n.) by which you might leave a building.
☻︎ Guting station(古亭站) has nine exits. The restaurant is not far from Exit 2.

2. interrupt /ˌɪntəˈrʌpt/ v. 打斷(講話或講話人) to stop a person from speaking for a short period by something you say or do

To interrupt someone means to do something that stops them from speaking.
☻︎ The professor’s lecture(講課n.) was interrupted when a student’s phone started ringing.

3. clear (adj.) /klɪə/ 明白的;清楚的 easy to understand, hear, read, or see

As it's used in the example sentence, ‘clear’ means easy to understand.
☻︎ Harold is a new employee(/ˌem.plɔɪˈiː/僱員n.) who’s just getting started, so make sure he has clear instructions on what he needs to do.

‘Clear’ can also mean easy to read or see.
☻︎ When I take my glasses off, everything looks blurry(/ˈblɜ˞ː.i/看不清楚的). But when I put them back on, everything’s clear again.

Well, that just about wraps things up for today’s pronunciation challenge. When I meet new people, I find it best(最佳的) to fight the urge(/ɝːdʒ/衝動n.) to talk about myself. By making the effort(努力n.) to listen to others and ask thoughtful(/ˈθɑːt.fəl/考慮周到的,關心的) questions, I find that *at the very least(無論如何), I learn things! But how about you? What are your thoughts and suggestions about meeting new people? Let me know in the comments below, and don’t forget to do your recording! I’m Jonathan for VoiceTube. I’ll catch you next time!

◆ at the very least:至少, 起碼, 無論如何
I'm certain at the very least they'll spare your life. 我敢肯定無論如何他們都會饒你一命。
At the very least, it's a fair question. 至少這是個公平的問題。
