Intro:

So then I was like, Bill, what’s your problem? I got them on sale for 12,000NT!
Wait--you spent HOW much on shoes?!

What’s up, VoiceTubers? Leila here. Today, we’re talking about the stuff that makes the world go ‘round--MONEY. To be more specific, how much things should or could cost. How much would you spend on a pair of shoes? The friends at the beginning of today’s episode had very different opinions on the answer to that question.

Here’s another one for you: how much should a mango cost? What if it were a really special mango? If you haven’t watched it yet, check out today’s video and find out how much high-end mangoes can go for in Japan. It sure blew my mind.

Alright, let’s get to the Sentence of the Day.

Sentence:
These days, high-end fruits have also become a prized gift in Japan for formal or even business occasions.

如今在日本,高端水果也成為正式場合,甚至是商務場合的珍貴禮品。

Pronunciation Tips:
These /theez/ the s is pronounced as /z/
business /biz-nis/
For formal (the intonation for the word “for” should go down, whereas “formal” should go up, since they sound so similar)

Vocabulary:
High-end (adj.) KK: haɪ ɛnd IPA: ˌhaɪˈend
intended for people who want very good quality products and who do not mind how much they cost
(產品)高價位的,高檔的
Example: Sharon had to smarten up her wardrobe once she started working at that high-end salon.

Prized (adj) KK: praɪzd IPA: praɪzd
considered valuable and important
非常有價值的,非常重要的,極其珍貴的
Example: Whatever you do, don’t touch Dan’s model trains. They’re his most prized possessions.

Formal (adj.) KK:ˋfɔrm! IPA: /ˈfɔːr.məl/
public or official
公開的;正式的
Example: We’re only having immediate family at the rehearsal dinner, but everyone will be at the formal ceremony.

Outro:

When it comes to spending money, everybody has a different idea of what’s appropriate and what’s overkill. But at the end of the day, as long as we’re fortunate enough to have all of our basic needs met, money is just a number. I think it’s a means to an end, NOT an end itself.

For me, that end is motorbikes! Oh man, if I told you how much money I’ve spent on motorbikes over the years, you might think I was crazy. But motorbikes are how I buy groceries, how I get to work, how I travel on holiday, and how I connect with friends. Motorbikes are life! Besides, what else am I going to spend my money on--mangoes? I’m allergic!

That wraps it up for today’s episode. Be sure to record your sentence, and hey, comment below with something you were told you were “crazy” for spending your money on. See ya next time!

These days, high-end fruits have also become a prized(/praɪzd/極其珍貴的) gift in Japan for formal or even business occasions.
當今在日本,高價位水果也成為正式場合,甚至是商務場合的珍貴禮品。

A: So then, I was like... Bill, what’s your problem? I got them on sale for 12,000 NT.
B: Wait! You spent how much on shoes?

What’s up, VoiceTubers! Leila here. Today we’re talking about the stuff that makes the world go ‘round(轉動)— Money. To be more specific, how much things should or could cost? How much would you spend on a pair of shoes? The friends at the beginning of today’s epic had very different opinions on the answer to that question. Here’s another one for you, how much should a mango cost? What if a really special mango? If you haven’t watched it yet, check out today’s video and find out how much high-end mangoes can *go for(選擇) in Japan. {It sure(=certainly)當然} blew my mind. Alright, let’s get into the sentence of the day.

1. high-end [haɪ ɛnd] (adj.)(產品)高價位的,高檔的 = intended for people who want very good quality products and who do not mind how much they cost

Sharon had to {smarten up} her wardrobe(/ˈwɔːr.droʊb/全部的衣服) once she started working at that high-end salon.

■ smarten (sb/sth) up : (phr.)(使)變得整潔入時,(使)變得時髦
She's really smartened herself up since she finished college. 她大學畢業後確實更會打扮了。

2. prized [praɪzd] (adj.) 非常有價值的,非常重要的,極其珍貴的 = considered valuable and important

What ever you do, don’t touch {Dan’s model trains,} they’re his most prized possessions(/pəˈzeʃ.ən/財產n.).

3. formal [ˋfɔrm!] (adj.) 公開的;正式的 = public or official
We’re only having immediate family(直系家屬) at the rehearsal(/rəˈhɝː.səl/彩排n.) dinner, but everyone will be at formal ceremony.

When it comes to spending money, everybody has a different idea of what’s appropriate(適宜的) and what’s overkill(過度n.). But at the end of the day, as long as we’re fortunate enough to have all of our basic {needs met}, money is just the number. I think it’s a {means} to an end, not an end itself.

■ means /miːnz/ n. 方法,手段
They had no means of communication. 他們沒有通訊方法。

For me, that end is motorbikes. Oh man! If I told you how much money I’ve spent on motorbikes over the years, you might think I was crazy. But motorbikes are how I buy groceries, how I get to work, how I travel on holiday and how I connect with friends. Motorbikes are life! Besides, how else I’m going to spend my money on? Mangoes? I’m allergic(過敏的). That wraps it up for today’s episode, be sure to record your sentence. And hey, comment below with something you were {told} (that) you were crazy for spending your money on. See you next time!
