They lowered(low減低v.) the cost(/kɑːst/費用) of admission(/ədˈmɪʃ.ən/入場費) and started earning(earn/ɝːn/賺得v.) more through their own concession(/kənˈseʃ.ən/特許權 n.) stands(販賣部), and so a custom(/ˋkʌstəm/慣例) was born.

What's up? VoiceTubers! Hope you're all having a fantastic week! I went to the cinemas(/ˈsɪn.ə.mə/電影院) last week with a few friends. One of my friends got the caramel(/ˋkærəməl/焦糖)-flavored(/ -fleɪ.vɚd/有…味的) popcorn(/ˈpɑːp.kɔːrn/ 爆米花) and he insisted(堅決要求v.) for me to try because he loves it so much. But for me, I thought having sweet popcorn is really weird because when I grew up in Australia, we only had salted(/ˈsɑːl.tɪd/含鹽的) or buttered(/ˈbʌt̬.ɚd/含有奶油的) popcorn. It was the first time I’ve ever tried caramel flavored popcorn and… it was way better than I imagined! I have always enjoyed *munching on something while I watch a movie.

■ munch /mʌntʃ/ v.
*munch on/at sth
He was munching on an apple.

Are you a person who also does the same? [Whether](是否conj.) you are this kind of person [or not], you might wonder(/ˈwʌn.dɚ/想知道v.) why eating popcorn has become a custom(慣例,習俗) at the movie theaters. If you’re curious(/ˈkjʊr.i.əs/好奇的) about this question like me, you need to watch today’s video! Then let’s get into today’s sentence right away.

1.1 admission /ədˈmɪʃ.ən/【不可數名詞】入場費;入場券,門票 = the amount of money that you pay to go into a building or to an event
admission charge/fee:門票
This museum is free(免費的) admission so you don’t have to pay for visiting it.

1.2 admission (n.) 准許進入 ; 進入許可,加入許可 = permission given to someone to enter a building or place, or to become a member of a school, club etc.
Tom is busy *applying for(申請) admission to the university recently.

2. concession /kənˈseʃ.ən/ n. 特許經營權;特許銷售權 = the right to sell something in a particular place; the place where you sell it, sometimes an area that is part of a larger building or store

stand (n.)

Many people are [waiting in line排隊] in front of the concession stand to buy some food.

3.1 custom /ˈkʌs.təm/ n. 慣例,習慣;風俗,習俗;傳統 = something that is done by people in a particular society because it is traditional
a local custom:當地習俗

*it is the custom for sb to do sth
This ancient custom has been in this country for decades(數十年).

3.2 custom- (prefix
custom-made : 訂製的
custom-built : 訂做的
He bought a custom-made suit(西裝) for attending his brother’s wedding.

Alright, that’s all for today’s pronunciation challenge! Now you know why we eat popcorn in the cinemas, right? Do you enjoy eating popcorn while watching movies? Or do you prefer munching on other snacks? Let me know what your favorite snack is in the comments so I know what I can buy next time I go see a movie haha! Have a fantastic day and I’ll see you next week, Peace!
