Intro:
Welcome to today’s pronunciation challenge! G’day I am your new host, Jenny. Before we begin with our topic today, I would like to briefly introduce myself. I was born in Taiwan and left to go to school in New Zealand when I was nine years old. Then I moved to Australia to study at the Conservatorium of Music in Queensland.
Now let’s get back to today’s topic: Fingerprints. We all have them! Some of us use our fingerprints to unlock our phones, to unlock our front doors and so on. But do we know how exactly a tiny fingerprint can help solve a crime? Well, if you are a fan of CSI TV series, you probably would agree with our sentence of the day. Let’s get right into it:
Sentence: [1'16'']
A fingerprint is probably the most important piece of information when we don't have a known connection between the victim and the offender.
當我們無法找到受害者和加害者之間關聯性的證據時,指紋可能就是最重要的資訊了。
Pronunciation Tips:
There are two ways to pronounce the word “the” ( /the/ or /thi/), because sometimes we pronounce /thi/ to emphasize the following word, so it really depends on the speaker’s tone.
有些人會覺得唸 /thi/ 更能強調後面接的那個字
另外剛剛有注意到 我沒有唸 piece of information 嗎? 這邊我們會把這兩個字連在一起 所以會變成 piece-uv. A piece of information.
Piece of , here we can link up the two words and say piece-uv. A piece of information. A piece of cake!
Vocabulary:
1. Fingerprint (n.) /ˈfɪŋ.ɡɚ.prɪnt/ 指紋
the mark left by the pattern of curved lines on the end of a finger or thumb
So this pattern is very unique, almost everyone has a different fingerprint on each of your fingers. What are the odds of finding identical fingerprints? According to Scientic American, the chance of two finger-prints being identical is less than one in sixty-four thousand million. 科學人雜誌說要找到兩個一模一樣的指紋,這個機率低於640億分之1。That’s why it’s very secure for someone to use fingerprints to lock up their valuables. We’ve all seen it in movies where the thieves try to steal the fingerprints to unlock a safe right?
Example sentence:
The thief used a piece of tape to duplicate the rich person’s index finger’s fingerprint to get the diamonds.
小偷為了要得到寶石,用了一段膠帶去複製了那位有錢人的食指印。
2. information* (n.) KK: IPA: ˌɪn.fɚˈmeɪ.ʃən
facts about a situation, person, event, etc.
Since the word “information” is uncountable. We use the phrase “a piece of” to express the size or quantity of “information”.
Here is an example sentence:
We were really close to escape from the escape room, but we were missing a piece of important information.
我們就快要成功可以逃出密室了,但還少了一件關鍵的資訊。
3. Victim (n.) vɪk.təm
someone or something that has been hurt, damaged, or killed or has suffered, either because of the actions of someone or something else or because of illness or chance
Here is the example sentence:
The media’s broadcasting about the victims is just another way of hurting them again.
媒體播報關於受害者只是對他們造成二次傷害。
Outro:
That’s it for today’s pronunciation challenge! Although fingerprints are crucial as evidence, I think it’s also very common for thieves to know that they need to wear gloves and such. But then again, we have more and more modern technology now to help us solve crimes, fingerprints will only be an additional reference. Leave me a comment and tell me what’s your favorite crime TV show! And don’t forget to do the recording. Thanks for listening. I’m Jenny and I’ll see you next time!
