  • In this American English pronunciation video, we're going to go over the pronunciation of

  • the word 'application'.

  • This week's Word of the Week is 'application'. Application has four syllables. Ap-li-ca-tion.

  • The first sound is the AA as in BAT vowel. The jaw does need to drop a good bit for that

  • sound. A-, a-, apl-. Then we have the P followed by the L. So, the lips will come together

  • for the P, and the tongue tip will go here for L. So, when the lips part for the P, the

  • tongue is in position. Apl-, apli-. The IH as in SIT vowel in that unstressed syllable.

  • Apli-, apli-ca. The stressed syllable begins with the K consonant sound. So, the back part

  • of the tongue will reach here, kk, kk, touch the soft palate, and release. Applica-, -ca-.

  • The AY as in SAY diphthong. Since this is the stressed syllable, you will need to make

  • sure that you do drop your jaw enough for that first half of the diphthong, -ca-. And

  • finally, the last, unstressed syllable, is the SH sound, schwa, N sound, -tion. You don't

  • need to worry about making the schwa sound. The N sort of takes over that vowel. Since

  • it's unstressed, it should be very quick, and it will be flat and a little lower in

  • pitch and volume, -tion, -tion. Application, application.

  • I need it for my application.

  • That's it, you're Word of the Week. Try it out yourself. Make up a sentence with the

  • word, record it, and post it as a video response to this video on YouTube. I can't wait to

  • watch it.

  • That's it, and thanks so much for using Rachel's English.
