  • Imagine a man who is noble and dignified.

  • There are two ways to express this comparison.

  • The first sentence compares the man to a lion clearly, by using the words "like" or "as."

    第一個句子直接把男人清楚地比喻成獅子,運用「like」 或是「as」等字。

  • In contrast, when we say, “The man is a lion,”

    相反地,當我們說「這個男人是頭獅子」,

  • we actually are turning the man into a lion.

    我們其實是把男人變成了一頭獅子。

  • The first sentence is a simile.

    第一個句子是明喻。

  • In a simile, the reader mentally compares the two different things.

    使用明喻時,讀者會在心裡面比較兩個不同的事物。

  • The second sentence is a metaphor.

    第二個句子是暗喻。

  • In a metaphor, the reader feels the comparison between the two different things.

    使用暗喻時,讀者會感受到兩個不同事物之間的比較。
