  • Conner: Wow Julia! You ok?

  • Julia: Yeah sorry about that. Just had to let the Kraken out for a second. Sorry I’m

  • totally Hangry. Do you have a granola bar or something?

  • Conner: Wait - is there actually any real science behind being hangry?

  • Julia: There totally is!

  • The human brain uses more energy than any other organ in the body. Despite being only

  • 2 percent of our total body weight, the brain needs over 20 percent of all the calories

  • we eat!

  • And it burns those calories as energy in the prefrontal cortex, which is the part responsible

  • for self control and personality expression.

  • So when were not fueling our gluttonous think tanks, were actually losing self-control.

  • That’s when hangry gets real - real fast.***

  • You see, when self control stops, aggression often starts. Studies of people who had low

  • levels of glucose, or empty stomachs, were more likely to act aggressively to loved ones,

  • be rude to strangers, even damage someone’s hearing.

  • Seriously! One study from Ohio State University gave one group of students lemonade sweetened

  • with sugar, and the other got lemonade sweetened with Splenda. Sugar has calories, which provide

  • fuel for the brain. Splenda does not.

  • So what was the hangry group more likely to do? Blast a complete stranger with a loud

  • noise through headphones. Why? Cause I’m so damn HANGRY!!!

  • Thanks for watching guys! And please make sure to like and share this video. Sorry.

  • I really should eat something. Like this video about why we get hangry? Check out this video

  • on why we have nightmares.
