Bob,歡迎來到這堂英語課,我會在這裡教你們一些可以用來討論工作的用語。 In fact, I am back at work. 其實我已經重返工作崗位了。 The school day just ended, so, I'm happy about that because I can take my mask off. 學校剛放學,所以我很高興,因為我可以摘下口罩了。 It's been a long day, actually. 事實上,今天是漫長的一天。 But I'm definitely back at it. 但我肯定是 back at it 了。 And that's the first phrase that I wanted to teach you. 這是我想給你們的第一個片語。 Sometimes, when you take a break from work⏤like, as a teacher, I had the summer off⏤when you start working again, you say that you are "back at it". 有時,當你從工作休假時(例如身為一名教師,我放了暑假),當你重新開始工作時,你會說自己是 back at it(重返工作崗位)。 So, "back at it" is a simple phrase that just means you're working again. 所以說,back at it 是一個簡單的片語,用來表示你又開始工作了。 The other phrase I wanted to teach you is the phrase to "be back in the swing of things". 我想教你們的另一個片語是 be back in the swing of things。 The first week of school, things were a little rough. 開學第一週的一切都有點辛苦。 It's hard to remember how to do everything. 要想起如何做每一件事是很難的。 But, eventually, you get used to the job again, and then we use the English phrase to "be back in the swing of things" or to "be back into the swing of things". 但你最終還是會重新適應這份工作,然後我們就會用 be back in the swing of things(重回正軌)或 be back into the swing of things(重振旗鼓)這樣的英文片語來形容。 And, basically, all that means is that work seems pretty normal to me now, I've remembered how to do this job, and I think I do it pretty well. 基本上,那都意味著工作現在對我而言已經恢復正常、我已經想起怎麼做這份工作,而且我覺得我做得很好。 So, I'm definitely back in the swing of things. 所以説,我肯定是 back in the swing of things。 Like I said, the first week was a little rough while I was trying to remember how to do this job well. 就像我說的,在我努力回憶如何做好這份工作的第一週有點艱難。 I certainly needed to work out some kinks. 我當然需要 work out some kinks。 That's the third phrase I wanted to teach you. 這是我想教你們的第三個片話。 When you need to "work out some kinks", it means you need to kind of relearn how to do the job well. 當你需要 work out some kinks 時,就表示你需要重新學習如何做好你的工作。 Sometimes you know exactly how to do it, but you haven't done it for a long time, so, when you start doing the job again, you need to work out the kinks. 有時候,你很清楚該怎麼做,但你已經很久沒有做了,所以當你再次開始這項工作時,你需要 work out some kinks。 And certainly, after I worked out the kinks, I needed to roll up my sleeves. 當然,在我 work out some kinks(解決問題)之後,我就得 roll up my sleeves。 Now, I know I wear short-sleeved shirts, but the English phrase to "roll up your sleeves" means to get to work and to work hard. 好了,我知道我是穿短袖襯衫,但 roll up your sleeves 這個英文片語的意思是開始工作並努力工作。 So, after I worked out all the kinks, I certainly rolled up my sleeves and started doing the job well. 所以說,在我 worked out all the kinks(解決所有問題)之後,我當然就會 roll up my sleeves(開始工作)並做好工作。 This is actually my third week back at work, and it's time to get down to business. 這其實是我返工第三週,是時候做正事了。 In English, when we talk about work and we use the phrase to "get down to business", it means that you want to start getting work done. 在英文裡,當我們討論工作並使用 get down to business 這個片語時,這表示你想開始完成工作。 Sometimes, when you start a job, or restart a job like I just did, there are many things you need to do that aren't the actual work. 有時,當你開始一份工作或像我一樣重新開始工作時,你需要做很多不是實際工作的事情。 You have a lot of training and a lot of new things you have to learn. 你要接受大量培訓並學習很多新東西。 But now, because it's the third week back at the job, it's time to get down to business. 但現在,因為已經是重返工作崗位的第三週,是時候 get down to business(做正事)了。 It's time to get the actual work done that needs to be done because I want to make headway. 現在是時候去做該做的實際工作了,因為我想 make headway。 When you use the English phrase to "make headway", it means that you want to have progress at your job. 當你使用英文片語 make headway 時,意思是你想在工作中取得進展。 When you start a project or you start a task, you always want to make progress or make headway. 當你開始一個項目或任務時,你總會希望取得進展或進步。 When you say you want to make headway, it means that each day you want to get a certain amount of work done so that, eventually, you outdone the project. 當你說要 make headway 時,這表示你每天都要完成一定量的工作,以便最終完成項目。 It is always nice to get down to business and then to make headway. 踏踏實實地工作然後 make headwa(取得進展)是令人欣喜的。 So, so far, the job is really exciting. 到目前為止,這份工作很令人興奮。 It's fun to be back at work, but eventually, it will be the same old, same old. 重返工作崗位固然有趣,但終究還會是 the same old, same old。 In English, when we use the phrase "the same old, same old", it just simply means that something has become routine and maybe even a little bit boring. 在英文中,當我們使用 the same old, same old 這個片語時,它單純是表示某件事已成為例行公事,甚至可能有點無聊。 Usually, my job doesn't become too boring, but eventually, it'll just be the same old, same old. 我的工作通常不會變得太無聊,但最終還是會變成 the same old, same old(老樣子)。 I'll do the same things every day as I continue to do the job. 在繼續工作的過程中,我每天都會做同樣的事情。 Every once in a while at work, I need to go the extra mile. 在工作中,我時不時地會需要 go the extra mile。 The English phrase to "go the extra mile" means that you do more than you are expected to do. 英文片語 go the extra mile 表示你所做的比別人期望的要多。 So, I'm expected to teach my classes, but, sometimes, I go the extra mile by helping out a colleague on a project they're working on. 所以說,我被期望要教好我的課程,但我有時會額外幫助同事完成他們正在進行的項目。 So, at work, when you say that you are going to go the extra mile, it means you're going to do more work than they would expect you to do on a project or a task. 所以,在工作中,當你說你會 go the extra mile 時,就表示你要在一個項目或任務上,做比他們期望你更多的工作。 It's really nice to have colleagues that are willing to go the extra mile. 有願意 go the extra mile(付出額外努力)的同事真的很好。 Speaking of colleagues, I'm sure everyone has a coworker who needs to pull up their socks. 說到同事,我相信每個人都有一個需要 pull up their socks 的同事。 In English, when we say that someone needs to "pull up their socks", it means they need to work harder. 當我們用英文說某人需要 pull up their socks 時,意思是他需要更努力。 I'm sure at your place of work, everyone works really hard, but there might be that one person who just doesn't work as hard as everyone else. 我相信在你工作的地方,每個人都非常努力地工作,但可能有一個人就是不像其他人那樣努力。 And we would say that that person needs to pull up their socks. 我們會說,那個人需要 pull up their socks。 Because when everyone is working on the same task or job, it's nice if everyone pulls their weight. 因為當每個人都在從事同一項任務或工作時,如果每個人都能 pull their weight,那就再好不過了。 In English, when we say that everyone needs to "pull their weight", it means that they all need to work as hard as everyone else. 當我們用英文說每個人都需要 pull their weight 時,就表示他們都需要和其他人一樣努力。 When you have a job to do or when you're working on a project, 當你有工作要做或在做一個項目時, and if three people are pulling their weight, but one person is not working very hard, that person definitely needs to pull up their socks. 如果有三個人都在 pull their weight(努力工作),但有一個人卻不太努力,那麼這個人肯定需要 pull up their socks(加把勁)了。 I really do enjoy being back at work, but I do need to keep my nose to the grindstone. 我真的很享受回到工作崗位的感覺,但我也確實需要 keep my nose to the grindstone。 In English, when you're talking about a job and you say that you need to "keep your nose to the grindstone", it means that you need to keep working hard and not take too many breaks. 當你在英文中討論一份工作時,如果說你需要 keep your nose to the grindstone,意思是你需要繼續努力工作,不要太頻繁地休息。 It's important when you're a teacher like me, when you're doing this job, that you keep your nose to the grindstone. 像我這樣的教師,在從事這項工作時,最重要的是要 keep my nose to the grindstone(埋頭苦幹)。 Because if you get behind, the job becomes very, very difficult. 因為你一但落後,工作就會變得非常、非常困難。 I also wanna keep my nose to the grindstone because I wanna stay ahead of the game. 我想繼續 keep my nose to the grindstone 是因為我想 stay ahead of the game。 In English, when you use the phrase to "stay ahead of the game", 在英語中,當你使用 stay ahead of the game 時, it means that you plan well and that you work ahead and that you do things before they need to be done so that your job is a little bit more relaxing. 它的意思是你計劃周詳、工作超前,並在需要做事情之前就把事情做好,這樣你的工作就會輕鬆一些。 I often find that if I get behind, my job becomes a little bit irritating and I get annoyed. 我經常發現如果我落後了,我的工作就會變得有些煩人,我就會感到惱火。 But if I stay ahead of the game, I can stay happy at work and I can do really well as an employee. 但是,如果我能 stay ahead of the game(保持領先),我就能保持愉快的工作狀態,就能真正做好一名員工。 Well, hey, thanks for watching this little lesson on a few work
