To answer your question, it can really differ a bit depending on what acid you're talking about.

While old movie supervillains would make you think that acids are just some sort of body-dissolving vat of goo, acid products can vary quite a bit, from toilet cleaners, to battery acid and hydrofluoric acid.

But let's focus on that last one for a moment since it's a good example of what acids can do.

Used in a variety of applications from glass and metal etching to fluorescent light bulbs, hydrofluoric acid can pose a serious threat to you if you come into contact with it.

While it may not quite melt your hand off like you're thinking, hydrofluoric acid can travel quickly through your skin and into your bodily tissues where it damages your cells.

While I'm certainly not a doctor, and should only really be trusted to talk about pixelitis.

It sounds like you might be referring to "tinnitus."

Tinnitus is the perception of a sound, often a ringing, in the ears.
