- But China has been hard at work developing other counters as well. China has a vastly, vastly larger capacity to construct new ships than the US or any other country in the world has. The US currently only possesses four state-owned shipyards, while China possesses dozens of them. China possesses a whopping 230 times the shipbuilding capacity of the United States right now. And to put it in a perspective for you, just one single state-owned shipbuilder in China built more vessels by tonnage last year in 2024 alone than the United States has collectively built since the end of World War II to the present. A fact that has helped China seize the title of the world's largest navy today.
