Going back to the idea of our perception of reality being an interface through which we can obtain resources, it's not as if we have a goal to obtain a resource, and then we focus the entirety of our being in obtaining that resource. Like, oh, I need a job, so I'm just going to focus on that non-stop. We get distracted along the way, and faff about doing other things instead of what we tell ourselves is our most important goal. As Kaufman puts it, humans have multiple, often conflicting goals, some of which are conscious, many of which are not. So while we may need to get a job for financial security, we may also feel the need to hang out with our friends for connection, or play Call of Duty online for self-esteem issues. It sometimes feels good to talk about other people's mothers online. Not that I do it. I don't play Call of Duty. As we have many things we want to do and are pulled in many different directions, we can feel very conflicted in many situations. As Kaufman puts it, if sometimes it feels as though there are multiple personalities within you that are constantly warring with one another, well, that's because there are multiple personalities within you that are constantly warring with one another. Each of us contains a bundle of dispositions, emotional tendencies, values, attitudes, beliefs, and motives that are often contradictory and incompatible. So let's keep that in mind and bring this back to love, and consider our different needs in a romantic relationship to be its own bundle of dispositions.
