“The End Is Inevitable Maverick. Your Kind Is Heading To Extinction."
"Maybe So, Sir, But Not Today." - Top Gun - Maverick
Hello VoiceTube world! Welcome to the Pronunciation Challenge! For any new listeners to this program, welcome! My name is Hugh and I’ll be your host for today’s episode!
So it’s finally here! My last episode with the Pronunciation Challenge! I chose this video today because I wanted to leave everyone with one final message before 2023. Living life with no regrets. Living life with no regrets also doesn’t mean acting stupid either. For me, living life with no regrets means making each and every moment count. That’s where the lyrics, “But time is running out so spend it like it’s gold” come in. Time is precious and we must cherish it. I Ain’t Worried is a song about having a positive attitude about life. Enjoy life while you can. Make the most of it.
Let’s get to the featured sentence.
It’s tough to find one sentence with songs so for today’s featured sentence, I chose this part of the song.
Today’s featured sentence:
But time is running out, so spend it like it's gold, I'm living like I'm nine zeros. Got no regrets even when I'm broke.
I’ll say that again.
But time is running out, so spend it like it's gold, I'm living like I'm nine zeros. Got no regrets even when I'm broke.
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
Ok, so there weren’t many words in the featured sentence that I would want to pick for the pronunciation tips so I went with some words from the quote of the day.
For the first word, we have
inevitable
Five syllables.
“In” has a short i sound, “in”. “E” has a short E sound, “e”. “Vi” has a short i sound, “vi”. “Ta” has a short U sound, “tu”. “Ble” sounds like the word “bull”, like you are as strong as a bull.
Next up, we have
extinction
Three syllables
“EX” sounds like it’s actually spelt, “i g”, “ig”. “Tinc” sounds like it’s spelt, “stingk”. “Tion” has your typical “t i o n” sound, “shun”.
Lastly, we have,
regrets
Two syllables
I chose this one just to stick with the theme of this episode. =)
“Re” has a short U sound and “grets” has a short E sound. Regrets
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. inevitable
Definition
certain to happen and unable to be avoided or prevented
Used in a sentence you could say,
“It seems inevitable that they'll lose with the way they started the game.”
Next word,
2. extinction
Definition
a situation in which something no longer exists
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“The mountain gorilla is very close to extinction.”
And lastly,
3. regrets
Definition:
a feeling of sadness about something sad or wrong or about a mistake that you have made, and a wish that it could have been different and better
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“It’s always best to live life with no regrets.”
Hi everyone. First off, I want to say a big thank you to all you dedicated listeners! Some of the ones that stand out for me are Leeway, (I can always count on you to get your recordings in!), unickname (you’re always putting in the extra work with the definitions), and Kaka with your 3-speed specials! This episode would last all night if I had to go through every listener so I apologize that I couldn’t get to you.
So what’s next? Well, I’m also creating some things on my own as well. If you’d like, you can check out @thechinesedictionary on Instagram. Me and a few friends have made a series of videos that talk about things important to us and to others under the theme of a Chinese character. It’s kind of like a video journal or video poetry. If you watch some of the videos, you’ll recognize my voice!
Oh, I forgot to thank one last person. My best friend, Cinna. Thank you for always listening to my episodes.
Alright, that about does it for today’s episode. Get those recordings in if you haven’t done so already. Hit me up on Instagram if you want to keep up with what I'm doing outside of the Pronunciation Challenge @hughtran_. I wish you all the best. Bye, everyone.
