Intro:
Hello guys and welcome back. Today we are talking about shopping and more specifically, online shopping. Let’s start with our key sentence and go over our vocabulary words.
[0'38''] Sentence:
It's become very easy to donate our unwanted goods to thrift stores, which makes us feel better about getting rid of our stuff.
Let me read this one more time a little bit slower.
Here’s a grammar tip I’d like to point out about ‘it’s’ and ‘its’.
“Its” without the apostrophe 撇號 is used in reference to something owned by a person or thing previously mentioned in the sentence. For example: A car is no good without its wheels.
When you do see an apostrophe, it means part of a word has been removed. Therefore “It’s” is the contracted form of “It is” or “it has”.
[1'46''] Now, moving on to our vocabulary words.
Vocab:
donate (v.) KK[ˋdonet] IPA /ˈdoʊ.neɪt/
捐贈,捐助,捐獻 to give money or goods to help a person or organization
She donated all of her books to the local library before she went overseas.
她出國前把所有的書籍都捐贈到附近的圖書館。
thrift store (n.)
(出售二手衣物、圖書、傢俱等,通常用來為慈善機構籌款的)節儉商店
a shop that sells used things such as clothes, books, and furniture, typically in order to raise money for a charity
I bought this winter coat from the thrift store. It was only 20 dollars and I wear it almost every day.
這件大衣是在二手店買的。我每天都穿而且它只花了我二十元。
get rid of sth (phr.)
處理掉;賣掉 to sell an old or unwanted possession
We usually try to get rid of empty cardboard boxes as soon as possible before they become cluttered in the house.
我們通常會盡量在空紙板箱在屋子裡變得雜亂無章之前盡快處理掉它們。
[2'55] Outro:
Alright, I admit it. I love shopping online! It’s just so easy and convenient. Often the prices are much better than in the stores as well. A few times, after ordering something late at night, the package arrived at my door the very next morning! I was still in my pajamas!
Do you prefer to shop online or in physical stores? I guess it really depends on what you’re shopping for. For clothes, I definitely prefer to try them on in the stores before deciding whether they look as good on me as they do on the shelves. In our video, it mentioned that the average American buys around 66 garments each year! That is pretty insane! We live in such a consumerist society (消費社會) nowadays and unfortunately, this lifestyle is creating so much waste and pollution. Watch our video to find out more about America's Dopamine-Fueled Shopping Addiction.
Thanks for listening guys! I hope to see you back here again for the last two episodes I will be hosting on the Pronunciation Challenge show. Have a great new year! I’ll see you in 2023!
