Intro:

Hello VoiceTubers, did you have a nice weekend? Hope you’re having a great start to the week.

Have you heard of the American lingerie, clothing, and beauty brand - Victoria’s Secret? Originally founded in 1966 by Roy and Gaye Raymond, the company’s five lingerie stores were sold to Leslie Wexner in 1982, who grew the company into 350 stores by the early 1990s and became the largest lingerie retailer in the United States.

Let’s talk a little more about what happened to them after we go over our pronunciation tips. Now, have a listen to our sentence of the day.

[1’12’’] Sentence:
He popularized the specialty mall retailer, which had tightly-focused product lines and carefully-designed stores, and he took those stores and rolled them out to malls across the country.

Let me break up and sentence into sections and you can read after me.

Now moving on to our vocabulary words.

[2’06’’]Vocab:
popularize (v.) KK[ˋpɑpjələ͵raɪz] IPA /ˈpɑː.pjə.lə.raɪz/
宣傳,推廣;使大眾化 to make something become popular

Example:
This song was popularized by the TV series which everyone in my class has been watching.
這首歌因我們班每個人都在看的電視劇而流行。

specialty (n.) KK[ˋspɛʃəltɪ] IPA /ˈspeʃ.əl.ti/
專業;專長 a subject that someone knows a lot about

Example:
It’ll be my first time dining at the Hotel’s five-star restaurant. What is the chef’s specialty?
這將是我第一次在酒店的五星級餐廳用餐。廚師的拿手菜是什麼?

roll (sth) out (phr.)
推出(新産品、服務等)to make a new product, service, or system available for the first time

Example:
Next year, Uniqlo is going to roll out a new line of sportswear in collaboration with Taiwan's top 5 international sports stars.
明年,Uniqlo(優衣庫)將推出與台灣前 5 名國際體育明星合作的全新運動裝系列。

[3’10’’]Outro:

Victoria’s Secret became famous for its catalogs of sexy high fashion photography followed by an annual fashion show with supermodels who were referred to as the ‘Angels’. Even though these fashion shows have long been a high-profile branding vehicle, ratings were declining as
Victoria's Secret was slow to adjust to a shift from padded and push-up bras toward bralettes and sports bras, as consumers started to prefer a more natural look and bras built for comfort. Their last-ever fashion show, televised in December of 2018, suffered the worst ratings in its broadcast history.

You can find out more about the story of Victoria’s Secret in our video of the day. But before you do that, remember to record your challenge sentence. And this brings me to the end of today’s Pronunciation Challenge. Great to see you here guys and I look forward to seeing you again next Monday! I’m your host, Jenny. Bye-bye for now.
