Hello, my lovely listeners of VoiceTube! I just wanted to say thank you for continuing to practice with me. My name is Hugh and I’m your host for this Saturday’s episode of the Pronunciation Challenge! For today, we are continuing with the new course VoiceTube is now offering on their website. Check it out when you have time. We’re trying to teach you how to use English in everyday conversations! For today’s episode, we’ll be using terms used for sharing our personal experiences! In this episode, our lovely actors are having a conversation about a trip a colleague took. Oh, and let me clarify this one term since it’s not included in the featured sentences today. The term is “spot”. Literally, it means a dot or a small rounding mark either on a surface or a piece of clothing. When the two colleagues use it, however, it actually means a place! Let’s say you found a nice place for beef noodle soup. You can say you found a nice “spot” for beef noodle soup! So what’s a nice spot I found in Taipei during my time there? It’s actually quite famous and has a lot of sentimental meaning for me there. I’ll let you know when you finish with the featured sentences!

Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.


For the first word, we have
Board
One syllable.
This one is quite simple but I’m just concerned that you listeners might be confused about the pronunciation with the spelling. You know when you have nothing to do and you want to say that you’re bored? That’s it. “Board” has the same sound. Board.

Next up, we have
Floating
Two syllables.
Again, don’t be thrown off by the spelling. Don’t worry about the letter “a” in this word and just say “flow” for the first syllable like you’re in a flow. “Ting” has your typical “ing” sound with a T in front. Floating.

Lastly, we have
Amazing
Three syllables.
“A” has a short A sound. “Ma” has a long A sound and sounds like the fifth month of the year, “May”. “Zing” has your typical “ing” sound with a Z in front. Amazing.

Moving onto Vocabulary!

The first word is:
1. Board
Definition
a thin, flat piece of cut wood or other hard material, often used for a particular purpose
Used in a sentence you could say,
“Look at the nice board I bought for surfing!”

Next word,

2. Floating
Definition
to stay on the surface of a liquid and not sink
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“I finally learned how to float in swimming class today!”

And lastly,

3. Amazing
Definition:
very good
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“My trip to Korea was so amazing!”

So what’s my favorite spot in Taiwan? A few years ago when I first traveled to Taiwan, I visited Gaomei Wetlands with a dear friend of mine. I’ll never forget the time we stood knee-deep in the water watching the sunset. The view was so amazing. I remember shouting a few phrases into the horizon to give myself some encouragement because I wasn’t very happy at the time. The places my friend showed me really cheered me up and made me forget about my problems at the time. It’s a precious memory to me and I’ll never forget it. I was overwhelmed by emotions at the time but I never showed her. I don’t know if she’s listening to this but I just wanted to say, thank you.
