G’day VoiceTubers, welcome back. I’m your Monday host, Jenny. Did you know that September 18th is the annual International Equal Pay Day? The Equal Pay International Coalition (EPIC) started this holiday in 2019 to raise awareness on the topic of the gender pay gap. You can watch our video of the day to learn more about this issue. But before you do that, let’s take a look at our pronunciation challenge sentence and vocabulary words.

Sentence:

Pronunciation tip:

part of: linking words
reflect: the two ‘e’s have different sounds
women: is the plural version of woman. One woman, two women.

The gender pay gap or gender wage gap is the average difference between the remuneration for men and women who are working. Countless bureau research has been done around the world and on average, women are paid about 20 percent less than men. An obvious reason stems from the ‘motherhood penalty’ as women are likely to take absences from work due to their ‘womanly’ duties.

Surprisingly (or not so surprisingly), women are under-represented in decision-making roles in the workforce. Women also carry out at least 2.5 times more unpaid work than men. And a lot of women took the hardest hit during the covid-19 pandemic as school and daycare closures had a substantial effect on working mothers’ ability to fulfill their work obligations.

In recent years, more and more governments and large corporations are proposing to address the gender wage gap through transparency and information sharing. However, at the current rate of progress, four more generations of women will have to wait until the global gender pay gap is closed.
