“Sleep deprivation is physically miserable and creatively cathartic, as internal landscapes rise up from their dormant ashes.” — Jaeda DeWalt
Good day fellow VoiceTube listeners! Welcome back to the Pronunciation Challenge with me, Hugh, as your host for today’s episode! With today’s episode, I have to admit that I’m doing this more for myself than for you listeners. Why? Well, it’s because I am sleep deprived. I watched this video because I was curious as to what my brain probably looks like right now. On average, I get about 5 hours of sleep a night. This week, I’ve been getting about 3-4 hours a night. Feeling tired is normal for me. Whenever I sit still for an extended period of time, you will definitely catch me snoozing away. On the rare occasion, I do get a lot of sleep, I’ll be like a squirrel who just drank Red Bull. So what exactly happens when you don’t get sleep? Let’s get to the featured sentence first!
Today’s featured sentence:
Then, progressively, they gave them a series of tests in areas such as cognitive demand, reaction speed, hand-eye coordination, memory, and perception.
I’ll say that again.
Then, progressively, they gave them a series of tests in areas such as cognitive demand, reaction speed, hand-eye coordination, memory, and perception.
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have
progressively
Four syllables.
The first syllable, “pro” has a short U sound. “Pruh”. “Gre” has a short E sound, “gre”. “Ssive” has a short i sound, “siv” and “ly” sounds like the last name, Lee. Progressively.
Next up, we have
cognitive
Three syllables
“Cog” has a short O sound, “COG”. The second syllable, “ni” has a short i sound “ni”. “Tive”, also has a short i sound, “tiv”. Cognitive.
Lastly, we have,
coordination
Five syllables.
Separate the two O’s here. The first syllable “co” has a long O sound, “ko”. “Or” sounds like the conjunction, “or”. “Di” has a short i sound, “di”. “Na” has a long A sound, “ney”. “Tion” is your typical “T I O N” sound, “shun”. Coordination.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. progressively
Definition
gradually
Used in a sentence you could say,
“The disease got progressively worse over time.”
Next word,
2. cognitive
Definition
connected with thinking or conscious mental processes
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“Some of his cognitive functions were not functioning normally after the accident.”
And lastly,
3. perception
Definition:
a belief or opinion, often held by many people and based on how things seem
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“What is your perception of me?”
If you had to guess between your brain working harder or your brain working slower after being sleep deprived, which would you go with? It actually works harder, which isn’t a good thing! It has to work harder to do the same things. It’s actually similar to being drunk. Although I don’t like drinking and have never driven drunk, I imagine driving sleep deprived to be worse! I almost got into accidents a couple of times because of sleep deprivation. Sometimes, it’s better to just pull over to the side of the road and take a power nap. It’s better that than taking a permanent nap! Be Careful out there people!
Alright listeners, get those recordings in if you haven’t done so yet! Give me a follow on Instagram @hughtran_ to check out what I’m up to. Until the next episode, see ya!
