"The course of true love did never run smooth." — William Shakespeare, "A Midsummer Night's Dream"
How’s it going, everyone?! Welcome to the Pronunciation Challenge and I’m happy to have you here today, practicing with me! My name is Hugh and I’ll be your host for today’s episode! Today, we’re talking about breakups! Fun! Just joking! Breakups are horrible! I went through many heartbreaks myself when I was younger. (I’m not young anymore ha!) Had I known what I knew now, I would have saved so much time and energy! This video actually breaks it down to how the brain reacts when you go through a breakup! It’s actually really interesting. So what did I learn after all these years? Well, let’s get to the featured sentence before I tell you all what I learned!
Today’s featured sentence:
It’s why you find yourself experiencing a loss of appetite, fatigue, anxiety and many other symptoms that an addict goes through when experiencing withdrawals.
I’ll say that again.
It’s why you find yourself experiencing a loss of appetite, fatigue, anxiety and many other symptoms that an addict goes through when experiencing withdrawals.
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have
Appetite
Three syllables.
“A” has a short A sound. “PPE” has a short U sound and “TITE” sounds like the word “tight” like the opposite of “loose”. Appetite.
Next up, we have
Addict
Two syllables
“A” has a short A sound. “DDICT” has a slight C or K sound here to the point where it’s almost silent. You just kind of touch the sound ever so slightly and let go! “Dict”. Addict.
Lastly, we have,
Withdrawal Symptoms
Withdrawal has three syllables.
“With”, despite how it’s spelt, has a short U sound. “DRAWAL” is actually two syllables but blended into one quickly to give you, “DRAAL”. Withdrawal.
Symptoms has two syllables.
“SYMP” has a short i sound and “TOMS” has a short U sound. Symptoms.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. appetite
Definition
the feeling that you want to eat food
Used in a sentence you could say,
“I lost my appetite after watching something disgusting on YouTube.”
Next word,
2. addict
Definition
a person who cannot stop doing or using something, especially something harmful
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“I used to be a drug addict.”
And lastly,
3. Withdrawal symptoms
Definition:
the unpleasant physical and mental effects that result when you stop doing or taking something, especially a drug, that has become a habit
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“I experienced withdrawal symptoms after I stopped taking my anti-anxiety medication.”
Ok, so as promised, I’ll explain what I learned after all my years. I learned that time heals everything. That sounds so cliché (a phrase or opinion that is overused and lacks an original thought) but it’s true! Some people just don’t want to hear it because they’re in so much pain at the moment! I know, I know, it sucks! Like the video mentioned earlier, it’s like a drug addict going through withdrawal symptoms! It’s really not a pleasant feeling to go through. So why waste time? Use that extra energy to do something with your life! Work hard to become a better version of yourself! By the time you’re actually over the breakup, you would have become someone unrecognizable! They often say that the best revenge is simply living well. I’m not saying to just distract yourself. Make sure to take some time (after the breakup) to let out any pain you have by feeling it all the way! That way, you won’t hold onto it and have it haunt you many years from now. Feel it all the way and keep improving yourself. You can do it.
Alright, everyone, I’m going to sign out here. Get those recordings in if you haven’t done so already. Thanks for always practicing with me and make sure you come back again to practice with me on the next episode! Until next time, see ya!
