Intro:
Hello, everybody! I’m Tera, and this is VoiceTube’s Pronunciation Challenge. Today we’re going to talk about punctuation marks in English writing, specifically semicolons. But, why are punctuations so important? Punctuations not only help to indicate whether a sentence is finished or not but also play an essential role to show the relationship between sentences, phrases, and even words. Compared with commas and periods, semicolons are rarely used in writing. However, they can be pretty useful. Check out the video and see in what contexts semicolons can be used! And now, let’s take a look at today’s sentence.
Featured sentence: A semicolon's job is to reunite two independent clauses that will benefit from one another's company because they refer to the same thing.
Tips:
reunite: three syllables with the stress on the third one. "re" is /ri/, "u" is the same as how we say the letter "u", and finally, "nite" is "night".
independent: four syllables with the stress on the third one. "in" is a negative prefix. Notice that the three "e"s in this word have different pronunciations.
benefit: three syllables with the stress on the first one. "be" is /bɛ/, "ne" is /nə/, and "it" is just as how we will say it.

Outro:
I would also like to share some small but important mistakes that Taiwanese often make. First, be cautious of the full-width and the half-width characters. Since Chinese is full-width by default, when typing in English, especially punctuations, make sure that you do convert them into half-width. Second, space. In Chinese, we don’t use the spacebar quite often; however, we use it almost all the time in English. As a result, knowing when a space should be put is necessary. Notice that when using punctuations that always exist in pairs, for example, double quotes, parenthesis, and slashes…, there should always be a space before the first mark and after the second mark, and there won’t be any space in between. I know I might get you confused by simply saying this, so I’ll put some examples down below in the transcripts. Hope you find it helpful. Until next time!
