Hi guys, it’s me again and how are we all doing? In today’s world, from the moment we wake up each day, we are faced with a continuous stream of choices. From the fancy drink menus at bubble tea shops, to the wide selection of sanitary pads in the feminine care aisle, to the endless options of shows available on your streaming networks such as Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu, Amazon Prime, HBO....etc, etc and the list goes on! There are also the more important decisions such as what to major in at university, or whether to accept a new job.
If you suffer from choice paralysis like me, the more options we have in front of us, the harder it becomes to choose one. When I dine out with friends, I ask the waiter to go around the table and take everyone else’s orders first. I have a hard time picking out what I’d like to order, even after hearing everyone else’s decisions. I hadn’t thought about why it’s always so difficult for me to make a decision until I watched today’s video. It said that there’s the belief that somewhere in this abundance of options, there’s a right choice. I think it’s true to say that I’m scared about making the wrong decision.
Ok, let’s stop here for a moment and have a listen to our pronunciation challenge:
Sentence:
By giving yourself less decision space, the choice will be both less stressful and time- consuming.
Vocabulary:
1. decision (n.) KK[dɪˋsɪʒən] / IPA /dɪˈsɪʒ.ən/ a choice that you make about something after thinking about several possibilities
Example: When it comes to making big decisions, Russell usually seeks advice from his older brother.
2. stressful (adj.) KK[ˋstrɛsfəl] / IPA /ˈstres.fəl/ making you feel worried and nervous
Example: I prefer to take public transportation to work because I find driving during peak hour traffic is extremely stressful.
3.consume (v.) 消耗(時間或精力);耗費 (補充形容詞用法:consuming) KK[kənˋsjum] / IPA /kənˈsuːm/ to use fuel, energy, or time, especially in large amounts
Example: In Taiwan, 66.4% of the paper we consume is recycled.
Outro:
We are overwhelmed with too many choices on a daily basis! If you’re having trouble making decisions like me, it’s important to know that sometimes we shouldn’t overthink the situation. You can limit down your options by being more specific about what you need. Also, understand that our brains will get exhausted if we need to make decisions constantly, so if you are starting to feel a headache late at night, it’s best to sleep on it and you’ll likely come to a decision more quickly on a clear head after a good rest.
Another tip from the video is to lower your expectations. Put less pressure on yourself to always have to find that perfect choice. You can also seek advice from friends and family, and also set a deadline with a reasonable time frame, so it can help force you to make a decision more quickly. The more practice and experience you have at making decisions, the more quickly you will be able to do it next time.
Thanks for listening guys and I hope you have a great week! Bye-bye for now.
