Intro:

G’day listeners and thanks for joining me today! Our video today explores the contemporary economic myth of women earning less money than men. What is your view on this? Long ago, there was the problem of women not getting as much education as men, but the world has changed tremendously since then and has eliminated the educational differences between men and women during the more recent decades. However, there is still a large percentage of people around the world who think that once you’re a mum, you shouldn’t be in the workplace. Even when a mother does work full time just like her male partner, she spends on average nine hours per week more than him on childcare and housework. This is actually the heart of the pay gap problem. It is not really about whether you’re a woman or a man, but it seems that if you are a mother, you get the ‘motherhood penalty’ and won’t make as much salary as the others.

It doesn’t matter if you have a male’s body or a female’s body, they should get paid accordingly. Let’s take a look at this example set by the country of Iceland where they have almost closed their pay gap in just a few decades. On October 24th, 1975, 95% of the women in Iceland refused to work, cook and look after children for a day to demonstrate their importance. After one chaotic day where the men had to take their kids to work and take on parental duties which they were not used to doing, things went back to normal but it changed the way of thinking and people started to acknowledge that women are as well as men the pillars of society. Five years later in 1980, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir was elected as Iceland’s first woman president and was elected three times after that. During the 16 years she served as the longest female head of state, a lot of new policies were introduced including that men were also obliged to take paternity leave to look after their children. This made a huge impact because now in the workforce, no matter if you have hired a young man or a young woman, they are all expected to take maternity or paternity leave.

Once we start changing our society’s stereotype that only women should be the ones to raise children, our culture will slowly accept that both men and women can be both caretakers and breadwinners.
