"It's OK to be weird. And maybe your weird is my normal. Whos to say? I think it's an attitude." - Lady Gaga
What’s going on Voicetube listeners! Welcome to the Pronunciation Challenge. I am Hugh and I will be your host for today’s episode. Today, we’re talking about being normal. What does that even mean? Is it being mature all the time? Fitting in with other people and doing the same things perhaps? Do you have any weird habits? I bet you do. I definitely do. We just don’t show it to the public. If you were to ask the people closest to me, they’d tell you that I’m a man-child. I rarely wear any pants at home. I sing off-key all the time without a care in the world. I sleep in the weirdest positions. There’s a bunch more but I’ll just keep it to those three for now. I just told you three weird habits I have, now it’s your turn! Let’s see who is brave enough in the comments! Before that, let’s get to the featured sentence.
Today’s featured sentence:
There's nothing strange about being compulsive, manic, anxious, sexual, worried, or mad.
I’ll say that again.
There's nothing strange about being compulsive, manic, anxious, sexual, worried, or mad.
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have
compulsive
3 syllables.
“COM” sounds like the word, “come” like come and go. “PUL” has a short U sound and “sive” sounds like the word “live” but with an S in front instead. Compulsive.
Next up, we have
manic
2 syllables
“Man” is exactly how it sounds, man, like man and woman. “Nic” sounds like the name Nick. Manic.
Lastly, we have,
anxious
2 syllables.
“An” sounds like it’s actually spelt “ang”, so it goes up to your nose, “ang”. “Xious” if spelt out like how it should sound would be “shus”. Anxious.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. compulsive
Definition
doing something a lot and unable to stop doing it
Used in a sentence you could say,
“I really need help with my compulsive gambling problem.”
Next word,
2. manic
Definition
very excited or anxious (= worried and nervous) in a way that causes you to be very physically active
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“Sorry, I’m a little manic right now and need to calm down.”
And lastly,
3. anxious
Definition:
worried and nervous
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“I get anxious before a big event.”
Y’know, if you guys really think about it, being weird is normal. We’re all weird. Like a dysfunctional family. (Remember dysfunctional? No? Ok, dysfunctional means not working normally or properly.) There are no perfect families! Having a dysfunctional family is normal! In fact, I think we should let our weirdness out some more unless your weirdness hurts others. I was also taught this in acting school. My teachers would always tell us that there’s no “right” way to act. We can approach the same scene in so many different ways. That’s your gift. Your uniqueness. (Uniqueness means the quality of being only one of its kind) That’s the reason we go watch Robert Downey Jr. or Johnny Depp. They’re different (or weird) in their own ways! They’re just comfortable with it! Be confident in your weirdness!
Alright, people, I’m going to wrap it up here. Remember to get your recordings in and also remember to stay weird! Hit me up on Instagram if you’d like at hughtran_. See everyone in the next episode! Bye!
