Hello, everyone! Do you like taking pictures? Most people [these days] don’t even need to own a camera, our phones already have such good cameras built in them. Not so long ago, if you wanted to take photos you had to own a camera, know how to load film into it, and [wait] a long time to get developed. It took a few days before you could see your photos. This was the case only 30 years ago, but today we can take photos anywhere and anytime, edit them and show them to others around the world in a matter of seconds. It is so easy and convenient. And this [changed] so much about how we interact with other people. For example, people are more careful about how they talk and behave in public, because [at any time] they can be filmed by others. It also make people more exposed to what life is like can other parts of the world. Anyone can share their experiences by taking a photo and sharing it onto the Internet, other people can then see it instantly, and even interact with it. Nowadays you can often see people taking photos and videos of themselves, and posting them onto social media. We all became reporters about our own lives. I sometimes wonder if people would still take so many photos of themselves if we didn’t have the Internet to share them on. Perhaps it’s less appealing if you can’t show the photos to others. People were fascinated with the idea of self-portraits hundreds and even thousands of years ago. You could argue that the cave paintings [made] thousands of years were a form of self-portrait. People [felt a need] to document their lives even back then, and definitely more so when the modern painting was developed. Painting portraits was a very common way of earning money in the past, and it wasn’t cheap, only rich people could afford that. So today we do have a cheap and easy way of taking portraits. Let’s take a break now and have a listen to our pronunciation challenge.

Sentence: It had a mirror next to the lens, so was basically designed for selfies, even though that term wouldn't be coined until 2002 in Australia, 它在鏡頭旁邊有一個鏡子,基本上是為自拍而設計,即便「自拍」這個詞一直到 2002 年才在澳洲被創造出來。
Pronunciation tips: Had a (linking works, sounds like ‘hada’) Basically (say ‘bay-suh-klee’) Designed Coined Australia (英美式差異)I’m not sure exactly how the Americans pronounce this. Maybe they say “Aus-tray-lia" but I am more used to saying “Aus-trah-lia”.
Vocab: 1. basically KK[ˋbesɪk!ɪ] IPA/ˈbeɪ.sɪ.kəl.i/ (adv.) 基本上 used when referring to the main or most important characteristic or feature of something
Example: I have a bit of a cold, but I’m basically healthy. 我有點小感冒,但基本上我是健康的。
2. selfie KK[ ˋselfi] IPA /ˈsel.fi/ 自拍照 a photograph that you take of yourself , usually with a mobile phone. Selfies are often published using social media. Example: The girl sitting at the table next to me has been taking selfies non-stop for over ten minutes! 坐在我隔壁桌的女生,已經持續不停的自拍超過十分鐘了。
3. term KK[tɝm] IPA/tɝːm/ (n.) 術語,專門名稱;措詞 a word or expression used in relation to a particular subject, often to describe something official or technical
Example: Crescendo (cresc) is a musical term meaning a gradual increase in volume. Crescendo 是一個音樂的專有名詞,代表逐漸加強音量。
4. coin KK[kɔɪn] IPA/kɔɪn/ (v.) to invent a new word or expression, or to use one in a particular way for the first time 創造,杜撰(新詞或新的表達方式)
Example: Beyonce coined the term ‘bootylicious’ to perfectly describe a rounded butt. “Bootylicious”這個字是碧昂絲發明的,用來形容一個又圓又漂亮的屁股。
Outro:
Before snapping a picture, there are so many techniques to make a selfie look good. It has to do with the camera angle, the lighting, and of course – filters. There are so many phone applications that offer built-in camera filters, designed to even make our skin tone look beautiful and flawless.
It seems to be the new norm now, seeing people standing in the middle of the street pointing a phone at their own faces, or even talking to it. Selfies have become very popular and there’s definitely value in doing so if you are a celebrity or have any kind of social media following. It is a good way to engage with people that are following your profile. For the rest of us, perhaps you enjoy making beautiful or funny pictures using the added features inside photo apps. No matter what – taking selfies can be a fun and pleasant experience, and it is definitely much more embraced by society today than a few years ago. Alright, say... cheese! (insert shutter noise). Thanks for listening guys and I’ll see you again next week!
